** The Official ASUS P5N-E SLI & Ultra 650i Thread **

What would be a good replacement heatsink for the NB on this board, been trying to overclock my quad but can not get past 2.8 and I suspect that the standard NB heatsink isnt much cop

The stock NB heatsink is fine imo. Ive put a fan on it at times but never removed or replaced it, even the paste is still stock. Ive had 3.4ghz for a year and the NB at 1.7v, its gets dam hot maybe as hot as the gpu or cpu itself but this board is as stable as any Ive ever owned

The Quad needs better voltage regulation, so others have said. This board has 3 phase vrm and other boards that clock quads higher have like 5 phase? Im not sure but thats more likely the problem then the nb.

Leave your window open and stick a delta on everything if you think its heat but its probably not so in this case

OK chaps, E6600 is out Q6600 G0 (low VID to boot) is in!

Little disappointed to be honest, stuck at just 3ghz and I’m seeing 0.12v drop when priming!!!!:mad:

Poor cpu is still managing to prime away at 3ghz with just 1.19V vcore under 4 instances of prime load!

Temps are no more than 35c load with my pretty damn efficient h20 loop.

Disregarding the vdroop under load, is there anything I can do to help it get above 3ghz with my quad. If I add more vcore it just doesn’t help, it will simply restart after the xp logo.

Anyone else got past 3ghz with this board and a quad?? Any tricks I should know about??

Still on the 0202 bios btw, never had an overclocking problem until now so stuck with it.

Would appreciate any help :)

Hum, knocked the multi down to 7 and upped the FSB to 1600 (run higher with my e6600) which should run the CPU at 2.8ghz but it won’t post. Upping the vcore doesn’t help.
Should I max out the chipset voltage??

Cheers

Had no probs with my duo E6600, would switch multi’s within windows and run any FSB in linked mode. The board is just acting real strange with this quad now. Having to reset the cmos almost every time I change the QDR value, getting tedious and I’m very tired. Work in 6 hours! yay

Think I will call it a day, will look at ordering a replacement mb tomorrow

In my case..

E6600 425mhz 1.59v chipset, no probs!

Q6600 more than 333mhz at 1.59v chipset, no go!

only have a 60mm fan over the chipset heatsink so sort of hesitant to ramp it upto max, probably will tonight.

still wondering if anyone on here runs significantly more than 3ghz on this board with a quad.

Cheers

The P5N-E doesn't have a good power management , its only 3 phase.

6phase is really needed on a Quad. The quads draw a lot more power.

Its not a suprise you can't get over 333fsb Hesky. These boards are renoundly bad for clocking Quads.

Might be worth upgrading to a P35 board. I recently did it and now regret the P5n-E it was my worst buy ever tbh.

Hi Waso, I'll have one more bash tonight and if that fails I will grab a decent P35 board

Kind of wishing I didn’t spend so much on a new GFX card now.

Regards to MBs I have no idea which one to get, theres so much choice. Looking at the Asus P5K range and Abit IP35 Pro mostly.
Maybe real cheap and grab an MSI P35 Neo2-FR for just over 60 quid, seem to overclock Q6600 very well.

Well I went for the P5K Premium Black Pearl Special Edition in the end, got it for just over 100 pounds which I think it a good price.
So very nearly got the MSI P35 Neo2-FR instead for its super cheapness and good quad overclocking.
Overall it seems the P5K is worth the extra though.

Oh, just to add, I tried the chipset voltage on max and it still refused to load windows, almost like there is an unpenetratable FSB wall on this old board. CPU vdrop seems to be getting worse also.

Yeah, I'm sorely tempted to ditch my board and get a P35 board to overclock my quad, but I'm just worried about the Vista X64 OEM edition which apparently under Microsoft's new Vista policy, they wouldn't re-activate. New mobo = have to buy another copy from what I've heard. Hopefully that's wrong.

ring them up on activation they should swap it.

Dont bother mate i got a P35 board and it wasnt worth it.

Got 3Ghz on my P5N-E SLI and only get 3.2Ghz on the Asus P5KC

Wish i still had my 650i board tbh

A decent overclock isn’t just dependent on the chipset though.

From what I have read the P5KC has a 4-phase power design this is why it still struggles to overclock quad core cpu's, it should fair a little better than the P5N-E's 3-phase pwm setup though.

Quads do seem to overclock better with a 6-phase power design and Asus's top end 8 phase power design topology found on the P5K-E/Premium and Deluxe mbs are perfect for high voltage big overclocks on quad cores.

My P5N-E will run my QX6700 at 333 x 9 = 3GHz quite happily. The vdroop is awful but with a BIOS increase from stock 1.35 to 1.375 is prime95 stable for 24hrs. But I've just been running it at stock, the increase isn't really worth it. So I guess I can't complain too much. That's the limit anyway with the Freezer 7 Pro.

To try any higher would require an Ultra 120 Extreme or similar. I'm going to buy one of them anyway - assuming that it fits the board ? - and see if 3.2 Ghz is achievable on 3-phase power... That increase would be worthwhile. That's assuming the VRMs don't explode or something....

My watercooled quad runs no more than 30C load when running prime, the vdroop is so excessive I actually find the temp drops a few degrees! I have a 4ghz G0 and it hits a serious wall on this board.
There just not temp limited untill you can get an mb that can run some serious vcore under load conditions
