** The Official ASUS P5N-E SLI & Ultra 650i Thread **

I would imagine there is a non cpu related reason why it wont clock any higher.

Thanks. My OC is 1.8 -> 2.5 stable. BUT
1. starting the PC is occasionaly problematical
2. I put too much thermal compound on (couldn't be bothered to strip down, clean and start again)
The CPU temp NEVER goes above 38degC with OCCT. (MB temp 37)

If the above is a symptom of too much compound then tell me and I'll do it again. Otherwise I just want to know what's the best value OC CPU for the P5N-E SLI mboard. Cheers.

The question of how much TIM to use is a subject in itself, if you have a flat cpu and hsf then a very very thin layer is needed, mine is actually translucent as my CPU and water block have both been laped.
If you cpu temp doesnt go above 38C then there is another reason why ** OC is limeted, these chips are normally getting 3 ghz plus so i would say that an incorrect Bios setting is to blame.

I also put my paste on translucent as both surfaces were as flat as a razor blade. Paste is just there to stop any air being present, metal on metal is better

What does coretemp say

I notice those newer cpu dont clock so well or as easily as just a plain old e6300 or e6400. I set mine to 3.4ghz and its been stable for a year 24/7 pretty much & I notice pegasus is at the same sweet spot

I dont reboot much but occasionally it would be silly about it

Excellent - keep us informed. I'm still on 0608

Still on 0202 - 22/11/06

Just put the latest Bios (0803) on and its a keeper for me. Allowed me to boot straight back in with a 480 fsb and none of the issues i had with the 07** and 08** bios.

my E4300 goes to 3GHz no problem so it's not the board restricting you. What voltages are you using?

The E2200 with it's 11x multi would probably be a good bet if you're insistent.

Well you need to actively cool the northbridge and max out the voltage to reach 500fsb and still then its only stable for pi runs. Would never run a night of dual prime without getting to hot and locking up at 500mhz. Knock it back a bit and it will be happy.
I’d like to be proven wrong though :)
With a lower multi my old e6600 would wizz past 450, just not run highest multi for obvious reasons.

Thanks for replying...
I've tried most things (many times) apart from reinstalling the CPU with less gunk. Voltages:-
VCore 1.5, NB 1.563 rest Auto
FSB(unlinked, QDR) 1129 MHz
MEM 820 MHz
Cheers.

Any news on what people are getting with the new 0803 bios?

Just wondering as I'm tempted to update and see if I can get a more stable 3.4Ghz with my E6320 without having to ramp the voltage up soooooo damn high.

I doubt that the BIOS would help you in that regard. But I'm curious also :)

I've been happy with it over the past 2 weeks and am not looking to roll back. It should incorporate the X-Fi / 4 ram stick compatibility enhancements from recent releases so unless I encounter any issues I can't see myself doing so.

0703 and 0801 were very poor, but this seems comprable to 0608 in terms of overclocking potential (at least on my system). Bear in mind I am only using a relatively modest FSB of 1440 however.

Well as a very curious cat, I thought i would update to the newer 0803 and here are my findings. Spec is P5N-E SLI, E6320, 2GB Corsair XMS2 800Mhz & 7900GS.

1 - As soon as I flashed it, instant stability problems regarding the memory. On the 0608 I had the ram at 900mhz 4-4-4-12 2T 2.1v stable with over 8hrs prime95 blending. Have managed to get it stable (ish) again on the same settings but now I need to pump in 2.2v. System still hangs every now and then.

2 - Previously had the E6320 @ 3.2Ghz very stable on 1.33v with excellent temps not rising on idle above 32c and under load 50c. Seems now I need to have at leaast 1.35v through it and even then i'm still not 100% sure that its enough.

3 - As soon as I sorted the CPU & Ram problems, I then had to rebuild by bootcfg files as the bios had somehow corrupted them. i did the flashing via DOS so was a little confused as to why that had of happened. Also had to do a fixmbr which got me back into windows.

4 - When I do a 'warm' boot, I sometimes get hangs when the bios screen shows and occasionaly when I do get into the bios, I only get half the initial screen showing, and again it hangs. Seems I can only get into the bios when doing a cold start after leaving the machine off for 10 secs or more.

5 - THIS IS THE FUN BIT!!!.....I cannot for the life of me downgrade back to 0608. I have tried via the bios, AWDFlash and even the windows utility and I get the same message all the damn time. I have tried with the /QI and also the NBL (nobootlock) and still cannot flash back any of the bios's. The previos versions used to let me do this but for some reason, 0803 will not let me roll back. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? :(

Conclusion......

All in all I am not very happy with this bios. It may just be that I need to do some more tweaking but it seems the issues are still there for me that were in 0703 and 0801. When using 0608, I can set all the overclocks instantly and have no issues with it whatsoever.

This is what I get when I try to flash to 0608 with the Windows Utility
