** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

Hmmm, looks like I might have fun with my new 4870, when it arrives. Looking at the heavily overclocked 8800GT results, it seems like its going to be a fair bit more nippy than my current stock 8800GTS512 at 1920x1200, especially if I can get a nice overclock from it (depending on temps ofc). Would be nice if I get a cool running one that gets some nice clocks with good old easy overdrive haha, easy performance street...

*THEY WERE AT 1600X1200 (UNSURE OF CLOCKS)and UNDERCLOCKED CROSSFIRE*

Ok P45 Motherboard [email protected] 2 x HD4850 @ stock 625/993
Crysis Bench dx9 High

1 card 35.04fps @4xaa 25.275fps System power 104Watt.....185watt MAX
2 cards 49.355fps @4xaa 30.295fps system power 144watt......260watt MAX

3d2006 Crossfire as above settings 18,946 sm 27831 sm3 8666 (no cpu score)

Finaly got my system up together and glad to see my scores are falling in line with yours

I have done a few quick CF runs and have the following results:

System: C2D E8400 @ stock, 2 x HD4850 @ stock, Asus P5Q Pro (Pro)
Crysis bench: 1680x1050, no vsync, all high, DX9 (64 bit)

Single card - 35.35 (No AA) 25.02 (4xAA)
Crossfire - 46.8 (No AA) 28.78 (4xAA)

It looks like the only difference is the slight bump you have on the cpu clock (maybe makes a slight difference as its a quad).

Interestingly I also did the following test:

System: C2D E8400 @ stock, 2 x HD4850 @ stock, Asus P5Q pro (P45)
Crysis bench Dx9 1680x1050:

Click Here (not very clear but you can just make out the settings)

Single Card - 27.83 (2xAA)
Crossfire - 43.70 (2xAA)

This is a scaling of 157% which in crysis isn't too bad at all.

EDIT:

OK in Crysis my F setup is definately cpu limited.

I have just done another test this time with my E8400 @ 3.6ghz with all the settings @ high 1680x1050 DX9.

Single card - 35.65 vs 35.15 @ 3ghz (so a 4% improvement)
Crossfire - 50.84 vs 46.8 @ 3ghz (8.6% improvement)

This means CF scaling (overall % of a single card performance) has gone from 133% @ 3ghz to 142% @ 3.6ghz. I can only assume @ 4ghz CF scaling would be about 150% which in crysis at least isn't bad at all.

that's a pretty respectable OC...the only way to get more is increase voltage through pencil modding or hardmodding

ahh right i thought it was rubbish, Gurusan master of OC, GPU clock 700mhz 1140 memory clock is that any good or will the GPU clock higher?

OK just fitted my 4870 and had a quick stab at overclocking the core.

First tried the max CCC and it ran fine with Furmark stability at 640x480 4XAA on air.

I'm now running 880 core running FurMark with the aid of the ATI overclocking tool. Is this any good?

OK just had a first stab at the memory 1200, seems fine.

This is under water before anyone asks.

Very nice only 76 points away from taking top slot for a single gpu on here.

Surprised your score wasn't higher looking at Gurasans. He has a slower cpu and his is only a 4850 card. I thought you would be 500-1000points ahead maybe????

IS 880 your max core before errors or just your max so far?

880Mhz Core with no extra voltage or mods? (bios mods or other)
1200Mhz (4800Mhz effective) - Holy Heck! What cooling are you running on the memory? - no mods, or adjustments to memory?

Good work!

I could run 890 but it was a bit hit and miss. Memory was just a first stab so not sure what the limit is there.

With regard to 3D mark 06 I have a problem where it seems to jump frames. Really bizzare I suspect some part of a Nvidia driver is lurking in the background. Tried to run Driver Sweeper but that fails with a runtime error. Hopefully a reinstall should improve the score.

I have a Sammy F1 1TB coming tomorrow so I will reinstall the OS.

Thats stock just under a Maze 4 idle 28'c load 32'c

Memory and VRM are cooled with heatsinks with a 120mm fan sat on top of the maze 4 blowing down.

Seriously impressive! Incredible bandwidth @ 4800. Would be amazing if you could reach 5000! (only 50Mhz 'real' more, and would make it 1400ddr above standard!

Also, people often forget about airflow around gfx cards when they get watercooling, so it just goes to show how good it can be when you set it up properly with airflow running alongside :)

Also, if it does 880 on stock volts, it sounds like you have a VERY good chip to add a titchy bit more :D Shame we can't do the old bios volts (or can we?) or use ati tool anymore for increasing voltage on ati cards :(

Matthew

I'm hoping volts mods come out via bios with the super 4870 cards which overclock to 950 so I reckon they must be running at higher voltages to get that.

Surprised nobody has found a pencil mod for the 4870 yet. Guess it's not possible?

Yeah I was wondering about the diamond super card as it only mentions about using a different bios to achieve UPTO 950Mhz, which leads me to also believe that it may be possible via bios again to adjust mods. (ATI really are lacking in that department).

EDIT: Greebo - your sig reads "1 x Sumsung 500Gb". Spelling error?
