Yeah I was just being far too cautious. As you say, get up near her and just wail on her from behind. You can recover a bit of health that was as well.

Honestly that last point is something to take home. It took me until almost the end of the game to truly appreciate how useful that new mechanic is. It's so tempting when taking damage to just roll away repeatedly but honestly, taking a hit, dodging the next carefully and then swinging to regenerate health is exceptionally useful. If you monitor it carefully, it's entirely possible to take damage and never have to use a healing potion during any of the boss fights.

I still do not get this game. What is the point of the first level where you try and beat hordes near a bonfire, then wolves on a bridge and some huge thug. To then go through a fog. Meet a huge cleric beast it kicks your ass. And... Back to hunters dream. Result. All those you've killed reappear so due to thinking. Sod this. Already killed them all, I'll run past the lot. Enter fog gate. Get a cleric boss kicking. Back to hunters dream.. ????

Erm really? I fail to understand this. Just isn't providing a sense of progression. Just an endless battle with respawning hordes , wolves and beasts which actually for the first level you don't even need to engage in battle as you can just leg it past the lot to reach the first boss.

I'm failing to get this... Seems unfair my hard battles are wasted once reach an end of level boss, as amazingly the level resets and the hordes , wolves, baddies are in the same places, doing the same things..

Game has become run as fast as you can, avoid the hordes. Learn the path to the big bad boss and hope to defeat him...erm hmmm pointless progression rewards this feels like.

And where is the story? Is there one?

Yep the rally mechanic is great, the game seems designed around not really needing blood vials much, took me until Amelia to figure that out

The souls games were all like this insanely infuriating

It just isn't for some people who don't like a learning curve/time investment, once it clicks you'll learn its fair and you've just been playing poorly, but it can be a painful process and I understand if you can't be arsed with it, I dropped DaS 3 times at Havel

Also yes there is a story, it just isn't served on a plate and the same rehashed garbage the majority of AAA games have

That's fair enough, I just can't be bothered with battling hard to beat a long and hard battle against something to then reach the end of said battle and die. I understand learning the boss movements to beat it. But to hsve the level totally resst. Seeing all the hard work and battles lost or for nothing then worse yet. Know you can just leg it past the lot anyhow... Erm, this is what I don't get.

Game hasn't clicked, and right now, I am amazed by its rave critic press and iconic that the ps4 highest rated title is actually the one I've enjoyed the least since owning a ps4.

How ironic...

This is because once you actually truly get a grasp on the mechanics, you won't be dying half as often. If I died more than 5 times to any boss in the entire game, that's a lot and I'm really not very good at these games, just experienced.

The enemies respawning are there to punish carelessness and also for you to farm for materials + levels. If you think you're going to run through levels in the future without killing enemies, you'll be in for a really tough time when you don't have enough echoes or shards to upgrade your weapons (which are more important than leveling up in this game).

Edit - also, many times you open shortcuts so that you *can* run to the bosses quickly, that's the point of exploring and killing before taking on the bosses of each area. There's an area later on that's absolutely enormous and if you forget to open the shortcut, you may have a 30 minute fight back to the boss.

They are tough games to get into but they are very deserving of their praise. You'll discover the story as you go but you'll have to take the time to read things and listen to conversations - it's meant to be a little cryptic, that's what keeps you guessing.

Yeah these games are very tough when you first start out but once you get into the groove you will hardly die unless you become careless or rush.
This is the best game iv played so far on the PS4. Mostly because the combat is challenging but rewarding and takes skill more than luck and I love the atmosphere and art direction. I love gothic type things and horror movies and dark music ect so this is like playing out a crazy fun nightmare lol and im a huge rpg fan so it all appeals to me. Its also really amusing to take a break and watch people on the ps4 live stream dying over and over on places you've completed.

I remember that feeling when first playing Demon's Souls, I actually ended up leaving it about a year before playing it again. I now have >500 hours in these games logged so it can just take time to click. The only time I've felt this game feel cheap is when the second boss (the one not on the bridge) charged me into a V shaped corner then charged me again and I couldn't get out.

I love the gun play in this too, they've somehow made the feeling you get when you parry someone twice as satisfying :D.

You have confirmed what I feared most about this game: repetition. For me that means boredom and the "new release" novelty wearing off pretty quick.

Must admit I'm feeling pretty much exactly this way. After finding out that in order to level up at all you need to reach the 1st boss. I just run past everyone, made it to him and got butchered. Just spent the last couple of hours grinding to try and level up. It has made things a bit easier, I haven't tried the boss again yet.

Still waiting for the story.

I really am trying to get into this game, after all, surely all the reviews can't be wrong.

Given a rest for the night as the all the grinding is getting very repetitive.

So after you die for the hundredth time and do you keep the xp from killing each time or is it reset

Still playing the first section and I'm dying a lot

Are you on the first level, there is a gate you can open for a shortcut to the boss, this will not reset even if you die, so the levels do not fully reset.

Had a good night, finished 5th or 6th boss and was on a high. Started getting tired, was in the Forest and died and lost 40k souls deeeeep in. I couldn't bring myself to go back, so much stuff to kill so i logged haha.

Need to have a break now until tomorrow but oh so love this game! :D

Grinding out levels is not going to make any part of this game significantly easier. In all of the souls games, level makes a negligible difference, which is why you can see so many videos of people clearing the previous games at level 1 with no gear without ever taking a single hit of damage (they'd die if they did).

It's going to give you a very slight boost in HP and damage but that won't be enough to compensate for not knowing exactly how and when to dodge/strike the boss or normal enemies. You shouldn't need to level up at all in order to clear the first boss, it just takes practice. Honestly, I found the start of this game significantly easier than say the first level of Dark Souls.

You're an hour or less into a 40-80 hour long single player game, so you won't be finding much out about the story yet.

I wrote a really long post as a reply to tecman a couple of pages back that explains how you need to approach these games. They may not be for you, but rest assured if you have the patience to stick with it, you'll find it to be one of the best gaming experiences available today. You'll also realize that your dying is not due to bad luck or needing to grind out levels, it's simply that you weren't doing something right or you got overzealous. This game has almost zero RNG in it, it's entirely based on skill and experience, that unfortunately comes with a very steep learning curve.

I just don't understand how this could be fun. The reviews read like its the holy grail of gaming. I've found it so far to be frustratingly repetitive and very strange in its ways.

I understand making a game a challenge. But sod battling through challenging sections to then die.

And I cannot believe the insight point I got vanished after I tried to summon help , I rang the bell to help with the cleric boss, no one answered. I had to move forward as before long some wolves would have made me their next meal and entered the fog without help died and my insight point gone. Result. A sleeping doll in hunters dream. Yeah totally enjoyed that..

And. When the doll was awake and I farmed. If I got cocky you'd soon see your stash of echoes gone.

Ok sometimes you can get that stash back by hunting the bugger down that killed you and earn um back by killing him. But erm hmmm lovely system.

Brutally hard game. Yet I just don't see how being so punished is fun. I have read loads online to try and help me, I understand some aspects , I also understand the blunderbus allows you to stun enemies when they are mid attack and I press r1 to leash a lethal attack , actually I did find this fun .... But the whole game hasn't clicked at all. And like you I'm searching to see what all the critics see...???

Restarted the PS4 and the rest of the game downloaded quickly.

Played for about 20 minutes. Died, went to the Hunters Dream, got the Cane and shotgun, entered the first world. Died, came back got my souls, whooped a few men. Reached big guy with Big axe, died. Tried to traverse my way back to him, forgot to use vials, got killed quickly by some crappy men and lost all my souls.

I remember why I loved Demons Souls now :D:D

(loading times really annoying, but after I get back into it I won't die so often, I hope!)
