*****The Official Canon 5DMK3 Thread*****

Buying from DigitalRev just saves you the VAT, that's why it's cheaper...

edit: I should add that I have used them before for lens purchases and never had an issue. Their price isn't going to impact UK prices at all though. I think they now offer a 1 year warranty that can be serviced locally as well, so no need to send back to HK.

I still reckon once stores have good stock we will see some jostling with the price. I don't mean a whole thousand pounds off, but retailers are going to want to try and attract you to them over other stores.

Our best hope is that it just doesn't sell well, that'll see the price come down sharpish! The 5D2 has dropped £800 in 3 1/2 years (£2300 to £1500)... On the more expensive cameras the 1D4 has dropped £1100 in just over two years (£4500 to £3400) and the 1Ds3 only £400 (£5499 to £5099, although it was around £3400 for a six month period 2010/2011).

the thing is, the 5dmk2 was such a steo up from the 5dc and at a very very attractive price, it sold bucket loads hench taking 3 years to go down to 1k in price.

for the 5dmk3 i just dont see it having similar impact as the mk2.

1. price point is way too high
2. only killer feature it has is 1dx AF system

There was £300 difference with the launch prices of the D700 and 5D2. There's a difference of £250 the other way now. The D800 isn't a direct replacement for the D700 so that will continue to sell. As Canon intend to continue to sell the 5D2 alongside the 5D3 I can't see them dropping the price of them both in the near future. Although it would be nice to see the 5D2 dropped to a entry FF price of around a grand. The 5D3 could certainly have a hefty drop then. Of course if loads of people buy it, then the price is going nowhere!

The 5D3 22MP is looking to be nice for video as it scales to 1080p exactly. So again this looks to be aimed at the video market. I hate paying for something that I'll never use!

Have Canon got their pricing wrong and just didn't see Nikon releasing at £2400? Or did Nikon seriously under estimate?! Either way I can't see Nikon increasing prices and it remains to be seen if the 5D3 is deserving of a premium price tag.

Nearly bought a D700 for £900 yesterday...

You can understand why the 1D line doesn't fluctuate much in price because really it's a line that's only bought by those who really need it, likely Professionals who make money with the camera.

The 5D sits in the position of being both a professional camera and one for the serious hobbyist, further to that it became an important tool for Videographers. That's why it sold so well and as I've said before, it's the most used Canon camera on Flickr.

Aside from the entry level EOS cameras, the 5D is their most important camera. So if the price doesn't drop, they won't be doing themselves any favours with either new customers or existing ones.

From my point of view the price has got to drop, but there's plenty of people out there with more money than me! The 5D3 is basically the mythical 3D that Canon users have been after for years, plenty are rushing to buy it.

From a new user point of view though, you'd have to ask why you'd go for the 5D3 over the D800 from just looking at specs. How big that market segment is I don't know. Hopefully it's huge and Canon need to do some re-adjusting :D

Plus selling a 5dmk2 alongside a mk3 is another big reason that will help 5dmk3 not get sold much either as people will look and say umm, for half price i can get a mk2 which produces same IQ but missing just the AF system. yea i can live with that, canon her eis your money for the mk2. ta ta

Canon would already know this in their decision to continue to sell the 5D2, so this would already have been taken into account with their pricing. As already said, hopefully they hav got it wrong. Sadly Canon are a company out to make money and not one that is making great tech just for me at pocket money prices :D

There is rumour that apparently Nikon may have stopped making D700's despite saying they were still in production.
Apparently D700 orders are being cancelled in Canada...

Exactly.

I'd been waiting a long time for the mk3, but now I am beginning to think about buying the mk2 instead, as it would fit my needs, while still having a 7D for sports and events.

This wasn't something I'd previously ever even thought of, because I'd assumed the mk3 would be about £1000 cheaper than it's current price point, and that the mk2 would no longer be sold.

I suppose though we don't know how long they will keep the mk2 on sale or in production for. While it might be now, doesn't mean it will in a few months time.

Yes is does, the 5Diii images also look 'sharpened' somewhat as the shadows are darker and the highlight's are lighter than all the other samples at the same exposure.
But still, they look much better now compared to early examples, so maybe image processing has been tweaked a little in FW...

5DII images looking better here, looks to be little sharper than the 5DII but I am wondering if that is sharpening or a different AA filter. Pitty no D800 in those comparisons.

D4 images looking super clean as expected.

I thought the continued D700 production was only to use up the surplus parts resulting from the tsunami and then flood closing down manufacturing.

I don't think there is an official long term plan to sell D700 once stock and parts are gone that will be it. The D800 is superior in every way but it wont be possible to make the D700 significantly cheaper so the price points will never be far enough apart. Currently there is about $800 difference but I think the difference will decrease or stay the same.

It's definitely sharpening imo, if you compare the 5Diii images to the Nex7 which rivals the Leica M9 sharpness (no AA filter), you can see the 5Diii has darker shadows and lighter highlights, which is what sharpening does...

Again it's still the beta release and jpegs straight out of the camera. Nothing to see here, move along :D
