*****The Official Canon 5DMK3 Thread*****

What can I say, Canon was my first! :p

I'm currently deciding on a 35mm 1.4 or another D700 atm tbh.

When I build up another cash pot, I may then trade in one of the D700's for a D800...

Yeah I saw that, the 35L is a reason I'll probably stay with Canon. Although after renting it I'm no longer in a rush to buy one, my Sigma 50mm f1.4 does me ok for now. The one thing I read in a few reviews was the the focus speed of the Nikon 35nn f1.4 isn't as quick as the Canon, although it is very accurate. Never used one though. It's also the bigger\cheaper second hand market of Canon that attracts me :D Yeah I suppose getting the VAT back helps when buying a new camera as well.

I'm actually quite impressed with my Sigma 85, I really like it. CR did mention a while back that Sigma were working on a FF 24 & 35 1.4, so if they are anything like this 85, then I might end up with a Sigma 'Holy Trinity' :D

Yes, Sigma bringing out a FF 35mm would be excellent. The 30mm was my favourite lens on a crop, I still can't bring myself to sell it! The Sigma 85 is a long term target as well. I'm quite interested to see what Sony bring with regards to FF this year as well...

Don't believe so, these were just JPEGs straight from the camera with the default settings active.

Are these samples 100% crops?

chuffing nora I can't get over how nice 3200 is!! What a brilliant camera.

I think 3200 if not under exposed was extremely clean from the last gen FF camera's, so I assumed that was a 'given' with the upcoming one's. ISO's like 12800, 25600 & 51200 are the new usability barriers imo.

I'm sure 3200 looks similar on a 5Dii as well, for reference below is from my D700, and imo I don't think you could grumble with the 3200 noise levels either.

100% crop from raw file converted to Jpg.

Original raw can be found http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=3967.msg82562;topicseen#new

Rawtherapy was used to convert it, however the colours don't convert properly, so again this probably isn't a conclusive sample of ISO noise.

However from the above sample I would say the ISO is in the ball park of the 5Dii & D700, at least at 6400. Maybe it pulls away at higher ISO's, or maybe this raw conversion just isn't a good example...

As said earlier in the thread, the price will eventually drop to that of one closer to what the mk2 retails for.

For that to happen though, the 5D mk2 stocks have to be depleted and there has to be a good supply of 5D mk3s in the stores, which aren't just flying out like hotcakes the second they get them in.

Do u reckon it will drop to 2k this time next year?

After looking at the launch price of all the 5D incarnations the mark III doesn't seem that expensive considering recent economic changes and natural disasters.

5D - £2539
Mark II - £2299
Mark III - £2999

For some reason I thought the original 5D was a lot cheaper than that.

It's got to fall closer to 2K.

The 5D mk2 was such an important camera for Canon, it was the perfect camera for Pros and Serious Amateurs and opened up a whole new world for Videographers and Filmmakers.

At such an expensive price point, it alienates all but the professional user or business that knows they can recoup that cost.

The stocks of the 5D mk2 is what is key though, if as some have suggested, Canon isn't intending to stop production on it just yet, then that will keep the mk3 at a high price. However, that also seems odd to me to release a camera and still sell the old model, which depending on how you intend to use it, is still a very good deal (I'm mainly hinting at the AF here).

The other key thing is Nikon's new camera is a lower price point... so it also factors into how many people would be likely to switch from Canon to Nikon, or are just in the market for a camera anyway. Perhaps it's the success of the mk2 that makes Canon thinks it deserves more of a premium, i.e. "Well it's more expensive than the new Nikon, so it must be better...."

As soon as stock is available freely, I'm sure 'Bob's Camera Shop' will see Jessops selling it for £2999 and think, well I'm only small, I'll do it for £2899, then it goes from there...

Maybe canon are tearing the dmk2 as a entry level FF camera? if so, can we possibly see the mk2 sell for 1k?

The problem with that though is that I think sales of the mk3 won't be very high, as it will only be the pros who need the better AF performance buying it. In a studio environment and for portraiture type work, the mk2 will still do the job, so even some Pros might not see the benefit in the extra for the mk3.

As I've said before, the mk2 was a massive camera for Canon, if you look at the Flickr stats, it's the most used Canon camera on there by quite a margin. That's a good reflection of just how many amateurs bought it, likely far outweighing the number of Pros.

if sales ae not high, aint that a good thing as canon will decrease the price?

Of course, but then why have the old model on sale at all?

To get people to buy that instead? even at 1.6k, people will choose the dmk2 over the 5dmk3 if people dont care about AF.

So end of the day, there are two reasons why mk3 wont sell well.

1. 5dmk2 is still being sold and for half the price of a mk3
2. MK3 is way over price for most hobbiest.

Pretty sure that's what I already said above :p

1k price drop in a year is asking a lot... I don't know if I have the patience to wait that long.
