*****The Official Canon 5DMK3 Thread*****

I have no choice :( I'd like to have some form of a lifestyle, rather than either have a finance deal at £300 a month, or save the same for a year :D

I'll be getting this ASAP provided that there's no major downside to getting it from the US when I'm over there. I love the mark 2, it's my baby, but the autofocus has let me down on numerous low light occasions and I'd happily pay for the mark 2 with fixed autofocus without all the other bonuses from buying the mark 3

Forgot to mention that one thing I loved on the 5D3 was the grip, or more specifically the addition of the joystick.

Really wish/hope they bring out an updated grip for the 7D which has this feature as it's a total pain shooting portrait without it sometimes.

And that's when I'll buy it. I want the 24-70 too, which is a huge outlay in one go :(

i know what you mean mate.

Also i can see this being 1k cheaper next year. The 5dmk3 wont sell off the shelf for the reasons i have stated earlier

No warranty mate if you get it in the USA and when your dorpping serious money, you want some warranty on it mate

I noticed that Canon Rumours says that Canon has a policy in place which means the camera can drop in price from May, however there will be a price point that they can't sell it below for... no idea what that is of course.

Is it just me or am i the only one thats HUGELY impressed with the silent mode shutter! that is such a killer feature to have for any street/wedding/church togs out there!

The 5d3 firmware is still beta ! Anyone that takes these early results too serisouly is being a bit daft !

Firmware wont change the underlying sensor and ADCs.

The samples are supposedly from final production ready camera so there wont be a change in the underlying hardware. When the Nikon D3x was given to testers many did not like the performance at all, but that was because the cameras were using the original Sony sensor and not the tweaked Nikon version. Once the final production hardware was out everyone loved the sensor. That is not the case here with final hardware already in place. I doubt anything will change to the image processing algorithms and these mostly affect JPEGs only. The RAWs are mostly just a bare sensor readout.

Fair points - but - to use a hypothetical example - lets say the drivers for the ADCs are non optimised in terms of using the old drivers for the 10bit chips and not the drivers for the latest 12 bit version. Or maybe the firmware can control the exact parameters used for the sigma-delta ADCs that might be being used - just examples.

Just look at the difference a bios on a PC can make, or a graphics card driver update.

After playing with one - I do really quite want one. I had a client last week drop 3.5k on a whole set of portraits so I may even be able to afford one later this year !

Canon also seems to making a point of saying that most samples have come from pre-release firmware, so they clearly feel it doesn't compare to the finished product. It would also be non-sensical to release a camera with worse IQ than the previous version, especially given that it's renaming on sale for the time being.

The early samples were **** imho opinion, and some were processed in DPP which suggests a raw workflow.

However from the recent testing by imaging-resource, the files look much much better.

ISO performance looks to be 0.5 stop's cleaner than the 5Dii @6400, and surprisingly a hair sharper and more detailed.

Why on earth did Canon release any images other than ones that they know the camera can take on a regular basis? It seems to me that some that have the cash ready to go, and want a new camera will look at this and go to whoever has the best available. Granted it's a bit of a silly scenario as a sensible person will wait for release, but I can easily see people pre ordering a competitors if the 5DmkIII has questionable IQ.

Well the first batch of preorders seem to be snatched up so the early adopters are as strong as ever. Whilst the 5D3 is just the sort of camera I want, the price is just too high. I can't see it dropping 1k in a year, it might even be pushed to drop that far in 2 years if it sells well. The 5D2 still hasn't quite dropped 1k in price.

So I have a dilemma... I'd like a higher ISO performing camera than my 1Ds2 and a smaller form factor would be useful as well. I'm not patient enough to wait two years and I can't justify the money on a camera used for a hobby buying new, so I'll be looking second hand. So, I might sell the 1Ds2, get a 5D2 and see how I get on with the AF. Or I might just dump the lot and get a D700 instead... Then again I might just stick my fingers in my ears, shout la la la la la la, ignore everything new and keep what I have for as long as I can :D

I should add that I've also now read that what I posted before about Canon regulating the price from May, really only applies to North American retailers. It's a form of price fixing, which is banned in the EU.

So I believe here they will be free to do what they like and it looks like Digitalrev has been the first to bite. Of course they are in the slightly more awkward position of being based in HK and that you would have to return it for warranty issues, but that's already a good price drop.
