Have just explored the VKworld website at http://www.vkworld.cc
These guys design and manufacture phones that can withstand all types of conditions - water, sand, extreme cold.

It is very nice to see that the Chinese work hard and can offer phones for every style and taste.

I’m on the brink of ordering a Xiaomi Mi A1. I’m just getting cold feet at the prospect of ordering from overseas. Am I right in saying that it could get pulled at customs and I could have extra to pay? I could buy one from the rainforest for about £200 (I have a few gift cards kicking about). Is that still below what I would pay if I got hit with import duties/admin fees? Anybody else ship from the UK that people have used and could recommend? Any good recommendations for overseas orders?

have a read here for some advice..

a couple mentioned there guarantee no customs charges.. what they do is post the phone to an address they use in the eu and then post the phone from there to your address. as the second part is posting within the eu there will be no customs charge for you to pay.

I paid VAT at the customs, plus some small fees to DHL and a broker to prepare for me a customs declaration (because I don't have a digital signature that is otherwise required).
No duties.

If you calculate 20% of the cost and add on around £12 for the shippers rip off handling charge that's going to be the most you'll pay. However most sellers under-declare the value so, for example, you could end up paying 20% of £20 instead of 20% of £200. The advantage of the rainforest is that you can easily return it or if you have hassle contact them to sort it out for you.

This is only if the customs accept the original invoice. Here, they never do it. Instead, ask everyone for proves for the purchases - usually just a simple printscreen from your account in the website.

Thanks for the replies. I've had the vouchers (£50) lying around for ages. I'm taking the safe route with the rainforest

The Power button on my MIA1 has gone "soft" and although it still works its a bloody shame....
there's no way i can take the phone apart to fix it.

Ill get another Xaomi phone but deffo going to go more upmarket.

Smartphone explosions have become common as even big brands like Samsung struggled to keep flagship models safe. Series of incidents have been reported about iPhones, Xiaomi and Huawei smartphones exploding while using it, but the latest one involving a Nokia handset resulted in the death of an 18-year-old teen.

Uma Oram of the village Kheriakani in the eastern Indian state of Odisha was killed after her phone exploded while she was talking on it. DailyMail reported that the phone explosion left terminal injuries on the teen's hand, chest, and leg, and was declared dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

"As the battery of the mobile phone was draining out, she plugged it for charging while talking over it simultaneously," Oram's brother, Durga Prasad Oram, told DailyMail. "The cell phone... was put on charging when she started talking to a relative. Before we could know what exactly happened, Uma fell unconscious. She was declared dead at the hospital."

The publication also published photos of the victim, which are extremely graphic, along with a close up look at the burnt phone, which bears the name Nokia on it and it is identified as Nokia 5233. There haven't been any incidents where a Nokia phone has exploded in such a brutal way.

There is also no information on what triggered the explosion, but talking on the phone while it is charging is widely deemed unsafe even by the manufacturers. Mobile phone explosions are often caused by counterfeit accessories, such as the battery or the charger. In this case, it's unclear whether the Nokia 5233's battery was replaced or if the charger used was unauthorized.

Nokia shared their sentiments over the incident, but the Finnish phone brand's licensee HMD Global clarified that it hadn't manufactured the Nokia model in question.

"While we have not been able to independently verify the facts of any of these reports, we can confirm that the mobile phone in question was not manufactured or sold by HMD Global, the new home of Nokia phones, set up in 2017 to create a new range of Nokia devices. As HMD Global, we are committed to producing high-quality handsets which deliver a strong user experience and meet high customer expectations," HMD said in a statement.

In another incident involving one of the fastest growing smartphone brands in India, Xiaomi, had appeared in the headlines last year when its best-selling Redmi Note 4 had exploded. In this case, the smartphone wasn't charging, but a shopkeeper merely inserted the SIM card in the phone to see the handset burst into flames.

While these are one-off cases, Samsung had suffered from a major loss, both financially and brand-wise, when its flagship Galaxy Note 7 was recalled after it was deemed unsafe for use due to faulty batteries.

What's your point? That a single Note 4 burst into flames? Not sure why it's in this thread when the story is reporting someone being killed by an 8 year old Nokia.

Well I think my redmi note 2 is finally ready to be changed, I think the usb slot is damaged as it's suddenly stopped charging.
I'm thinking of either a redmi note 4 or LeTV 3 pro - any thoughts on which or alternatives?

Had a good look but I think 6" screen is too big so I went with a grey redmi note 4 from aliexpress (Xiaomi online store) and stuck to the free delivery.

I've been really happy with the redmi note 2 so if it's an improvement on that then great!

What are peoples experiences with Gearbest and customs? I know to avoid DHL like the plague but what about the UK (~£4) and GB (Free) priority mail? Thing I'm looking to buy is $850 so want to avoid extra fees if possible!

I bought an Android box from them and just used the free delivery. Wasn't charged by customs or anything.
