**** The Official Chinese Phones Thread ****

Urrgghh...I hate Xioami naming standards.
Just managed to order the wrong phone :(

Redmi 5
Redmi 5 Plus (Redmi Note 5 in India)
Redmi Note 5 (Redmi Note 5 Pro in India)

What's wrong with 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10......

Ah, so:
Redmi Note 5.......................................13MP front, and 12MP+5MP rear.
Redmi Note 5 Pro (in India)....................20MP front, and 12MP+5MP rear.
Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera (in China)..13MP front, and 12MP+5MP rear.
Is that right?

EDIT: Oh, and in addition, you see both "Global Version" and "Global ROM" versions listed.....sigh.

I *think* it might be "Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera (in China)..13MP front, and 12MP+5MP rear."
Because:
Redmi Note 5 Pro = 20MP(f/2.2) front, 12MP(f/2.2)+5MP(f/2.0) rear.
Redmi Note 5 AI = 13MP(f/2.0) front, 12MP(f/1.9)+5MP(f/2.0) rear.
But I know nothing about cameras and lenses and apertures etc.

I agree naming is very poor.

They did say they was going to be doing changes to the names and Note name was suppose to be dropped.

This company really could make things so much easier by making model structure so much simpler Redmi 5 and then larger version Redmi 5 Plus with all the models supporting all the bands out of the box (people will say that wont work well why not if you put support hardware in phone people can use software/firmware for bands there country needs)

I would really like them to add a dedicated sd slot it's annoying that because I use two sims i have to miss out because of them using only hybrid type.

Does Redmi 5 allow both sim slots to work 3/4g or is it still like old ones 2g only one slot and other is 3/4g?

I actually don't mind MIUI at all, and I previously had a ZUK running ZUI, and a Oneplus X and Samsung S4 Mini before that.

How are you finding the 2s now after you've had it for a short while and have you stuck with MIUI or moved to NOVA?

Another question regarding screen unlock and phone on a desk. Say you don't want to pick it up to use the fingerprint reader on the back, is there a swipe code when you tap on the screen to get into it, or is there a number code (annoying)?

I was going to grab the 2s but am waiting to see what the Mi8 initial reviews say. Still inclined to stick with the 2s as it's a bargain at £410 for the 128gb version in black and wireless charging is something I definitely want to go back to (and the Mi8 doesn't seem to have it).

Still on stock rom, perfectly happy with it, and you can set pin, password or pattern for lock box screen.

If you do get one, I bought like 6 cases from Ali and have decided on my fav, happy to send you the remainders if you want. :)

Perfect thanks for confirming those points. Seems to be the phone for me.

Which case did you settle on? I'd want to try the standard one it comes packaged with, but one review says it doesn't protect the front face at all. I'll also try a screen protector as I hate the screen scratching up over time.

My Mi Mix 2S came yesterday and I am impressed with it.
It's super fast and hardly any battery drain.
My only grip is that I wish I could sort the app icons alphabetically.

I will be selling my S8+ now.

Ok, I am on the Aliexpress site where they have a sale on for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Global. I'm looking at the 4GB/64GB version in black with a flip case added in coming to under £170. Not sure how much customs will be on top of this. But who thinks this is a deal and a half? Weird thing is that I am on Three SIMO and I heard Three and Xiaomi have partnered up. But no idea when we'll start seeing their phones being offered by Three. So do I bite the bullet and get the phone outright and get a cheaper SIMO elsewhere (looking at Plusnet) or risk waiting to see what Three will offer with Xiaomi phones? HELP!!!!!

Missus is advising I get the phone outright and get on Plusnet SIMO. She's on their 3GB data which is only £8 a month. Can't grumble I suppose.

At the risk of coming across as a shill, I'm still thoroughly enjoying my Redmi Note 5. £170 isn't that much of a deal in my opinion since that's essentially what I paid for mine a few weeks ago. I paid for the DHL shipping so it would arrive faster though. Didn't get hit by any import duties (but I bought from a seller which specifically advertised that I wouldn't get hit by any extra fees).

Do you have the name of the seller that you bought from, please? I kinda had a feeling the price wasn't much of a deal, but the rose gold 3GB/32GB version was going for over £120 and has since sold out. Lol.

Sure, I bought it here.

Looks like you have to get the extra shipping so if you don't fancy spending an extra £20, look elsewhere. Definitely get the 4GB/64GB version imo. Phone comes with a case, screen protector and power adapter for your region..

Ah, I saw that one earlier. The extra shipping cost did put me off. I would probably take a risk of getting it from here. Thank you though :)
