***The Official Core i7 Overclocking Thread***

Yeah as long as it stays below 85c it should be ok. I'm now at 3.9 with the same settings and its only 1 or 2 c higher.

Yeah that's what i'm thinking too and the way i have handled my C2D chips, so i'll give this one another shot to get to 3.8 :) Should help a bit with the thermal paste after some days anyway.

are you guys running with hyper threading off?
with it on, my temps go through the roof, but with it off they are about 20c cooler under load.

i've got my 920 up 3.9ghz at 1.35v, 80c max under load, everything else on auto.

my memory is running at 1563 (dominator 1600), am i right to think that the uncore should be double this frequency?

i want to hit 4-4.2ghz

Does hyper threading make a difference, i get the same results with it on and off?

i can't actually find turbo mode on the rampage 2, its not under extreme settings or advanced.

I've been trying to look for an overclocking guide of the rampage 2, but there is none to be found.

and what is the qpi supposed to be set to?

Cheers

It does to certain tasks.

Turbo is enabled by setting a couple of the options under CPU, You need CPU ration on auto and speedstep enabled. Then Turbo will appear

New i7 user here. Think I've got lucky... 3.8GHz prime stable all voltages default. 4GHz crashed. 1.425 Vcore and upping QPI/VTT to about 1.3 no good. How high should I go? Tempted to stick with 3.8 24/7...

My kit arrived on Friday... and I've spent all weekend gettin this up and runing -

-=Kit=-

Intel Core i7 920
Biostar TPower x58 Motherboard
6BG Corsair Dominator DDR3 (1600Mhz)
Noctua NH-U12P
Corsair 850W PSU
Antec Twelve Hundred Gaming Case

-=OC=-

AFter readin about and getting amazingly confused I thought I'd be oldschool about this and raise the FSB from 133 to 150.
I disabled Turbo Mode, Speedstep and HT.

Figures in BIOS are as follows -

CPU Freq - 3.00Ghz
QPI Data Rate - 5.400GT
Memory frequency - 1200Mhz
Uncore Frequency - 2400Mhz (Is this the northbridge?)

Looking at this I can push this a little further as the board supprts up to 6.400GT on QPI and the Memory still has 400MHZ till it reaches stock.. is this right?
How far can I pish to Unocre/NB?

Booted straight away into Windows with Temps of 35 31 34 33.

CPUZ looking good too.. and a time of 14secs for a 1MB PI.

if you turn hyper threading off, your vantage score will drop dramatically,i have it on for a stable 3.8ghz,with hyperthreading off i can hit 4ghz with ease

So will my NB/Uncore be stable at 2400Mhz and above or do I need to reduce it?

I left my machine overnight with SP2004 on SmallTFTs on all cores and it ran for 9.5 hours so it looks like that clock is fine, temp max levels were 60 58 56 57.

I'm a happy bunny so far :)

I've given up on 4 GHz. I *think* it's stable with 1.45/1.495 core/vtt but I have boot issues at these volts. Doesn't seem worth the effort when 3.8 is 12+ hours P95 stable with all mobo auto volts, so that's my 24/7 setting.

Thats not stock voltage, that auto volatage which is a lot higher than needs to be. You should check your temperatures and start to lower the volts to see how low you can go.

I know that's not stock mate. What I'm saying is 4 GHz is maybe just stable at these volts but with boot issues - 3.8 is stable at my mobo auto volts.

On another note - my rig at 3.8 is just about twice as fast at video encoding as my old Q6600 at 3.0 - nice.

That'd suggest that it isn't stable if you have boot issues, and when you say stable is that using something like prime or linx to test it?

Exactly. This rig is slightly different to previous builds - it doesn't seem to fail p95, it just bluescreens. 4 GHz basically bluescreens using p95 unless I use what I consider too high volts. 3.8 is fine with me.

Sitting here at 3.4Ghz..

FSB now at 170.. intersting tho that in the BIOS BCLK is still reading 133.. am I doing this right? lol.

NB is at 2.7Ghz and QPI is running at 6.1GTs.. RAM is now at 680.

Idle temps are high 30s.. just done a quick 5 min p95 test, small TFTs on all cores with HT enabled, temps reaches 74 on core 0 and 70 on the other 3 cores.

Is this acceptable?

Still on auto volts.. which raises the volts to 1.36v.
