Why on earth would you actively leave adds alive just to get some more pot-shots off on the boss? He's a damn bullet sponge. Unless you're doing the standard strike with 3 well geared high level characters all on the same page of killing him immediately you will get overwhelmed.
.
have you tried this ?
They only overwhelm you when you shoot at them. Don't shoot at them, AT ALL and they just ignore you.
Try it. You get the odd one or two that comes down and finds you that you might have to care of, but all the guys on top ? just ignore them and they will ignore you.
Take a 3 man group. Once in the room just before you see him, have one guy fall back to the previous corridoor with the steps. Have him keep an eye on the mini map. The other two sit at the door way hitting him with all you have. Once that floating thing spawns behind you (guy further back should call it) fall back to where he is, wait 20 seconds (Don't waste ammo on the wizard) it will vanish. Run back in and hit big guy hard again. It takes time but it defo works.
This game puts in place what some call "anti cheese" measures, to stop you doing things in a cheesy way. Like for example the nexus strike, which if you stay up the top and don't come down spawns minotaurs on top of you every 15 seconds. Like the bosses themselves that have a stomp mechanic with an AOE damage that gets around the fact they can't turn very fast and you could easily avoid getting hit by standing underneath him.
The same goes for the moon strike where if you stay in the room, shriekers keep spawning on top of you. The game is giving you a hint - don't be a cheese and hide in the doorway and go find a better spot. I'd definitely advise against this tactic.
