As mentioned you're best sticking to one of the exotic hand cannons for Trials. You might to run something different, but the sad truth is that everyone will be running pretty much the same weapon set up, so you'll be a step behind them if you're not running something equally as good.
Depending on the map....
Thorn, The Last Word or Hawkmoon as your primary.
A high impact sniper (that can kill through a revive shield) or a well rolled shotgun.
A proximity rocket launcher.
If you want to be competitive, those are the best options for you.
tracking is pointless in PVP.
Its all about the grenades and horseshoes proximity perk so you can fire rockets over / beside cover and have the rocket take them out behind it as you just fire the rocket over the wall / down the corridor and let the rocket do the rest.

Don't bother with tracking in PvP unless the RL also has G&H (Truth, Gjallarhorn). Even then, it'll often fly into a wall that the target has hidden behind.

Just purchased a ps4 and i did like destiny when i had it on xbox one, although i didnt rank up that high before selling the xbox one

Well that's up to you. I rebought it again not long ago and I had to have both DLC's to co-op with my son. If you want to play end game you need the DLC really. But if you just want to level and PvP then perhaps not; there is still a lot of fun to be had. House of Wolves particularly adds some pretty decent content, though.

Worth getting the DLC? I'll probably play some PVP at some point.
I think I was lucky in that most of the best players were doing the Iron Banner whilst I was getting my bounty. I think I'm going to leave my second one until another IB event or I find a void primary weapon from somewhere.

Just got the celestial nighthawk hemlet form the Poe 28 chest. Any good?

Few guys I play with regularly have it, and they think it's great. I think it's very useful too. Makes golden gun good in my opinion, PVE stuff at least anyway as it really lacks damage most of the time, the helmet lets you take out most majors in one hit if you're at level. Very useful if trickle is on to supply team mates with orbs.

Moody has been reborn as a Warlock. Found I was spending bugger all time playing as a hunter (last "proper" time was IB) and I have always preferred the Warlock (Pigtails master race).
Currently level 2 (D'awwww)
My warlock was my first and is still my preference but I do like having once of each. I suppose having two characters the same saves some time and effort in levelling up though. If you need a hand running through anything to level up feel free to throw me an invite if you're on.
I still think the best way is get a decent void sniper and spend the matches at the back of the map. Maybe not the quickest way to do it but certainly a safe way.
