***The Official E2140/E2160 Overclocking Thread***

Devious i would allways trust your bios for the voltage rather than any software program, for one its allways higher so in that way youre not bumping up the voltage up more than you think.

My bios reads exactly the same vcore as AI booster with this P5K mobo :)

Nice overclock though whats tat say about your temps :)

Just installed TAT and it reads higher than core temp which surprised me as they where always around the same on my other mobo's.

Pushed it upto 3.4Ghz, it wouldn't boot to windows with 1.4v so I upped it to 1.4375v.

Seems ok so far :)

What memory your running, nice timings.

My memory is as sig, im sure it will go higher than that though.

Very nice clock you have there, makes me wanna push mine that bit more now.

Temps look to good to be true, when youve finished with Orthos try stressing with tat and look at your temps lol.

That's probably because you don't have the latest core temp - core temp 0.95 will report temps similar to TAT.

And congrats on the overclock, 3.4Ghz is astonishing to put it mildly for an E2160!! This is so unfair :(

Here's my 2160 3Ghz overclock (Great chip :D ).
BIOS Vcore @ 1.425.
pci-e locked @ 100

Why does Orthos and TAT say my maximum frequency is 3374 mhz not 3000? I can't figure it out, Vista says the FSB is over 400.. Is it something to do with RAM settings?

Cheers, Sarge78

It because Orthos always reads your FSB x your default multiplier (9). You have dropped your multi to 8 and upped your FSB to 375, So 375x9 is 3375.

Thanks Devious,
Nice OC BTW, only 1.4375v to run at 3400mhz! (Do you have the standard P5K board?)

I have to push the vcore over 1.65v's (and Orthos still crashes after 45 mins)

Ok i tried 400 x 8 @ 1.45 [bios] but no joy
Could it be my board thats doesnt like above 400, i tried 390 and it booted into windows but failed Orthos after 7 seconds.
I think thats the FSB wall of these chips? Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

Im not sure if 400 is the FSB wall but it seems very tough to get over it. Ive been trying to get it stable at 3.6Ghz but my chip was stable @ 1.475v with 3.5Ghz and its taken another 0.05v to 1.525v to get it nearly stable :( . It failed just before the 8 hour mark.

Looks like 1.535v would do it, though the TAT temps were touching 70 deg during ORTHOS before so I dont think i would keep it as a 24/7 clock it just would be nice to do an 100% overclock with one of these.

I will try dropping my multi to x8 and trying 438FSB to see if there is a wall in the chip.

More stable now with 1.535v in bios (1.528v actual?) , im sure this would go on forever, unfortunatly i need to go play WoW :)

100% overclock £57 :D

Very odd one here.Im running dual boot,XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. XP i can sit at 36c 3ghz 56c orthos load. Vista 45c idle 60c load at the same settings. Damn Bill Gates and his attempts to stop me blowing up another PC

Thats just crap..lol

Vista and XP should be the same, can't understand why its any diferent, but i'm not going to pretend how vista works.

If i moved to vista and got nearly 10 deg in temps rise id go insane, Xp rules.

Nether the less ones lying.

Devious...have you lapped your cpu or is that outta' the box heatspreader ??
Mines at 3.5Ghz (testing now) but temp are higher than you.

guys...just bought an Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz.

I dont know much about this stuff but basically i was doing a budget upgrade. I previously had an athlon 64 3.7ghz on a 939 system and was originally gonna upgrade to the opteron and soem kingston hyperx ddr1 ram.

but I was advised to get this instead (which I have) as it was a basically the same price (approx £200 in total)...

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB)

so...

just 3 Qs

1. is this cpu a lot better than my athlon 64? The main reason I wanted the upgrade was cause I felt my Athlon was holding the rest back a bit (my gfx is an ati x1900gt)

2. Does the E2160 compare well to the Opteron 175?

3. I also dont know much about overclocking, is it just a case of changing the speed in bios? And is the stock heatsink/fan good enough? I will probably get an Arctic cooler freezer 7 though..

thanks!

3.7Ghz on an Althon 64 is amazing for someone who doesn't know about clocking :p

Im not sure what clocks you really got but if its running that fast i doubt an E2160 would make much difference.

The E2160 is faster clock for clock than the AMD and they overclock 3Ghz + quite easy.

The DS3 is a very popular board but I would get one of the P35 boards instead for aorund the same price. My Asus P5K work very well with my E2160 and it also supports the next intel processors which i dont think the DS3 does.

sorry I meant 3700+. Not sure what clock speed it runs at.

Well the 3700 runs at 2.4Ghz, the E2160 at 1.8Ghz, and i would say the E2160 would be slightly faster. If you push the E2160 to 3Ghz then you have a nice increase in speed.
