just lowered my 2160 to 3ghz.

does 3.4 @ 1.5v
3.2 @ 1.42v
3.0 @ 1.32v

Been running at 3.2 for a few months stabily but i think its worth it for the voltage decrease :(
 
Complete n00b to overclocking here (been reading various guides and threads for a couple of days though), and I could do with a little help.

Let's start with some specs: E2140, ASUS P5B mobo (not deluxe), Kingston 2GB KIT (2X1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 CL5 Non Ecc 1.8V, Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro.

First thing I'm wondering is why the multiplier seems to keep going down to 6, when it should be at 8 (6 being only 1.2ghz whereas 8 is 1.6... you don't need me to tell you that). Of course like an idiot I took the screenshot when it was 8, but you know what I mean. I presume it's because of some setting in the BIOS that manages it, but I'm a bit clueless as to what to change.

Second thing, the overclocking. I don't want to go overboard and match you guys, but I would like a little more juice (2 or 2.2ghz would be fine, little more if safe). I tried this myself, and got it up a little, but then my computer wouldn't start, it just kept powering up then restarting, wouldn't even go to BIOS. I'd leave it for a minute then try again and it would have an overclocked failure warning and let me change the settings.

I presume the main problem is likely the DRAM Frequency, which is a little beyond my brain's comprehension (I failed maths, go figure). I can't seem to get the DRAM to stay at stock while juicing the processor (and I'm afraid of frying everything, as any newbie probably is).

My third issue is with all of the AUTO settings in BIOS, which could also be a problem if they all change when I change the bus speed. Problem is I have no clue what half of the settings are, and what values to manually set them at.

So, putting this into the form of a question, basically what I want to know is how I can simply overclock it a small amount, make the DRAM Frequency and other DRAM settings stay at stock, and whether I can leave everything else to AUTO or not.

Sorry for the essay, I appreciate any help.
 
The multi dropping to 6 when idling is nothing to worry about, just speedstep (EIST) kicking in to save power.

The DRAM frequency is usually set in the bios as a ratio to fsb, you want it to be 1:1 while you experiment with your overclock, that way your memory is well within spec.

Also be sure to manually set the PCI express frequency to 100, this is very important and easily overlooked.

I have the same cpu and they can usually overclock quite far before you have to start raising the cpu voltage. Just take it in small steps and it should all become clear.
 
Vaughn, the multiplier drops to 6 because speedstep is enabled. It's intel's power saving feature. It's not an issue to leave it like this for overclocking as it will change under load in a split second and has no effect on performance.

Have a look at this thread http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17825087. It's not for your motherboard but is a good basic guide and most of the settings will be identical.

A nice simple overclock of 2.6ghz is easily acheivable with your E2140 if you set the fsb to 333, leave the multi at 8 and make sure that the RAM is set to DDR2 667 (it's then running at a 1:1 ratio and it's 667 because DDR means 'double data rate'). A vcore of 1.3v should be enough.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go soon. I basically tried before what you said wolvers, but the DDR amounts kept shifting (i.e. with a FSB of 200 I could choose 667, but if I changed the FSB to 250, the DDR would shift up too (not sure the exact amount)), and I couldn't figure out how to either input 667 manually or change the ratio.

I'll have a look at that thread.
 
Did what you said (or tried to), set the FSB to 333, got the option for 666 (or 667 to be precise), set the PCI-E to 100, VCore to 1.3v and memory to 1.8v. Same problem I've been having, PC powers up but my monitor just stays on orange light standby. Gone back to BIOS and reset defaults now. What am I doing wrong?

I couldn't get to them. Usually there's two menus in Jumper Free Configuration, under one is all the FSB/voltage/pci-e frequency stuff, and the other menu you can select the RAM timings. Problem is once you set the first menu to MANUAL instead of AUTO, the other menu goes away.
 
It just moves the rest down. Arrow down till they reappear.

Set them to 5-5-5-15 2t as per your cpuz screen shot. It's also worth trying a little more vcore, maybe 1.35 then if it boots into windows see what it is in cpuz.
 
4-4-4-12 will be too tight for your RAM.

Needs to be 5-5-5-15. Command rate should be 2T if you can find it.

Yup, was planning to. I found that screenshot on google, it's not mine.

So you think not setting the memory timings is what's causing the boot problems?
 
Hey guys,

I've been stuck at 3 GHz for a while, but after reading a few of your comments today I decided to have another play ;)

I set the pci-e frequency at 100MHz and I've bumped the vcore up to 1.46v (from 1.375v) and I've had a couple of successful 'stress tests' - 3DMark 06 and OCCT. I’m going to try Orthos tonight.

My temps never went above 66 degrees btw!

My reason for posting tho is to check whether 1.46v is a safe voltage for my chip :)
