Just researched this, GDDR5 is a faster version of DD3, it probably has double the bandwidth and latency is actually the same. Xbox has a much larger on die cache than PS4, but it's smaller than I thought. The PS4 is more capable than the Xbox.

I saw something a few weeks back saying that GDDR5 will be a benefit to graphics but DDR3 will benefit the CPU.

Something to do with DDR3 moving chunks faster, but smaller. And DDR5 moving larger chunks slower.

Not sure how that translates to the different architectures. But there is a benefit to the DDR3.

Yeah I think 2133mhz ddr3 may have slightly lower latency response times but the difference is negligable.

The Xbox cache is nothing more than a bandaid and the memory setup of the PS4 will be considered much more preferable to devs.

Timings and latency increase, the memory won't actually have that much to do with why the PS4 is quicker.

There's a common misconception that gddr5 is high latency due to the response times on high end video cards.

It isn't, it's just video card memory controllers are high latency as they don't need to be quick due to the workload. How Sony have designed their memory controllers remains to be seen but the system looks well balanced so I can't imagine there's any problems, only time will tell.

CPU's haven't been latency or bandwidth starved since ddr1 really.

For anyone wanting to read up about the differences between the consoles in more detail check the AnandTech comparison and write up.

Differences in the memory subsytems also gives us some insight into each approach to the next-gen consoles. Microsoft opted for embedded SRAM + DDR3, while Sony went for a very fast GDDR5 memory interface. Sony’s approach (especially when combined with a beefier GPU) is exactly what you’d build if you wanted to give game developers the fastest hardware.

Ugh!! The next gen consoles aren't out yet and I'm already just about done hearing the mindless arguments and bickering back and forth about them!

I haven't even decided which one will get my money first yet. I know the futures black and its rectangular shaped at least... :)

Just a thought. Do you think part of the deal of Sony licensing blu-ray to Microsoft has lead to the mess MS has found themselves in in terms of having to install all games from disk, online authentication, used games etc. You know... "yes, you can have a blu-ray in your new system but we insist on the following conditions being met...".

Would Sony have been able to demand certain things that push MS in to a corner? I mean, they had to use blu-ray in this new console didn't they?

That is a very good point.....hmmm

No chance of that. Sony would be investigated for anti-competitive strategy. Plus Microsoft wouldn't be pushed around by Sony like that.

Sony would have licensed Blu-Ray technology to Microsoft for a standard fee that any other company would pay, with the same restrictions as anyone else.

There's a schedule somewhere I'll try and link them.

From the "insiders" this DRM business was MS idea only, not anything to do with the publishers. Not sure why MS would want it though, unless the shop who can "unlock" MS games have to pay a hefty fee/price for the ability to do so.

C'mon, don't think like a fanboy dude. :(

Sony doesnt have that clout. Sony are a small part of a consortium.
