Don't pay for repairs in a sidey, fight to the death! As a tip, go for Eranin and don't get caught in a federation spawn, unless you are in formation with other Eranin ships i.e. don't get caught alone near the dreadnaught - find a nearby friendly lakon with its sidewinder escorts and tail them, then pick your targets. If more than one bad guy is shooting at you run away! Fighters first, then eagles, then cobras. Ignore the Anacondas, just keep your distance.

I made the mistake of buying a second laser for the sidey so I don't want to lose it. Managed to dogfight at the distress beacon for about half an hour or so last night and picked up over 3k so atleast I have that paid off now. Certainly more profitable than trading. Got out without any hull damage, I did have to run after shooting at an Eranin sidey that rammed me. All power to engine and shields and jumped out of there as quickly as I could :D

Even with the second laser the replacement cost of the sidey on insurance is only about 200 credits more then repairing the ship from low hull.

I will be happy to boost both the above posters to eagle or hauler this week if you want a helping hand by giving you progenitor cells. Send me a trust (Sega Mega Dave already has).

Woo standard beta now has access to a limited single player build. Sadly going to be atleast a month til I've got my new desk, etc. sorted and in a position to play it with anything other than keyboard and mouse.

Already downloading!

Note: The link they give you in the email is wrong. You need to go to Zaonce!

I just did it through my account bookmark, I don't usually click on links in emails out of habit. (Even when an email seems to be legit).

Ack.. Home in Ireland at moment so won't see this for another week :(

Do we know the recomended machine specs yet?

It's still in beta so nothing has been specified yet as more optimisations will be made before final release but it doesn't require much to get it running at good frame rates.

Here are the current minimums from the Alpha build (i.e. tbc):

Direct X 11
Quad Core CPU (4 x 2Ghz is a reasonable minimum)
2 GB System RAM (more is always better)
DX 10 hardware GPU with 1GB video ram
Internet connection

I am getting 14fps in some asteroid areas iwth an i5 at 4.6ghz, ATI 6950 (2gb) and 8gb of ram! Will have to try crossfire in a bit.

Btw does anyone have a good site which explains the HUD? I have googled but cannot find a picture which details out all the different instruments.

Strange, I have an i7 2600k @ 4.4, an old 5850 (1GB) with 8GB and running on high / default settings and it seems really smooth. I haven't checked the actual FPS yet though.

Just the read the other bit. You can find the Sidewinder manual here, though it mainly displays the same hints you get when playing the game.

I've just checked and I get around 36fps in the asteroid field going down to 28 at the lowest using my old 1GB 5850. Maybe Elite is very well written makes use of the extra threading capabilities of the i7’s hyper-threading.

I have to admit I am impressed this game makes good use of my cards in crossfire, stable fps now :). Although I almost got shot down whilst admiring the planets... Cracked windshield and no money for a repair :|
