It makes solo colonisation efforts a lot easier. My Type 10 had 740t cargo space, the Clipper has 1040.

Yeah and that's not an essential thing. This is why I don't get the pay to win label. I think I get the sentiment but it's almost akin in my eyes to buying boosts in a single player game.

It's not really a PVP game though so, and correct me if I'm wrong, the only element of that is that getting a ship like the clipper or whatever means you can speed your way through the engineering stuff quicker? Then you obviously have an advantage if you PVP with higher rated stuff potentially (though obviously you also need a modicum of skill to go with it).
And as I understand it, apart from losers ganking players around key places like Jameson, PVP in itself is pretty rare due to the size of the universe in the first place.
I don't do direct PvP in ED outside of CQC however it's more the making it easier to get the special hardware in the game that you can't always get any other way. it's competitive as not everyone can get the stuff and having a bigger ship will make it so much easier.

other players really care about the factions in the game and play the BGS in a highly competitive manor

PvP isn't always about making ships blow up.

I really need to jot down a system I'm doing missions in, I do courier missions and bounce from each one so never build up rep with any one faction lol.

end of the day you do you and if you are enjoying it that is all that matters..... however once you build rep with factions they rewards they offer for jobs done go up significantly.

and power play.... the perks involved for being pledged almost make the game a joke.. so a double edged sword there, but they can often cover your insurance completely if you get blown up, or cover fines or pay for all of your repairs and rearming.

it goes too far to be honest

Yeah i want to build up to bigger rewards but need to stick with one faction instead of doing what I'm doing. I'm choosing the rewards with most rep so making little progress initially.

Not touched PP yet, looks a bit of a ballache tbh and I CBA to learn all the bits involved.

Been watching CMDR Mechan tonight beating a Tharg Hydra in a Panther Clipper with a full cargo load of meta alloys worth 8 billion as a "stake", and he did it. Took 45 minutes to kill the Tharg. Popping heatsinks makes the canopy of the clipper loo exactly like the windscreen in my MkII Ford Escort on a Decembers morning, right down to the tiny clear spot you were happy to look through as you drove to work.

Do yourself a massive favour and pick a system that will lead to unlocking engineering or faction ranks, for example somewhere around Sirius so you can progress unlocking the permit at the same time, or somewhere aligned with either the Empire or Federation so you can progress with them at the same time.

What you have just said is one of the biggest things that puts me off playing this game. The fact that if you don't do a load of prior research you can end up just adding to what is already apparently a massive grind.
How would a new player even know about that if they haven't looked at guides or been told?

They simply wouldn't, it's one of many issues the game has but I still love it :p

as a new player i can attest to this. been an Elite freak since 1984, play/build for Oolite a lot, just picked up ED:O and....holy **** it's not user friendly. i think if it wasn't for YT tutes and discovering stuff like Inara and Spansh etc i might have given up. i started off doing like2.5 ~ 3hr pause and google/YT for every 1hr of play. currently doing exo research which builds up a shedload of money but holy god it's frustrating finding some of the samples.

I've recently been where you are I started 6 months ago. I made the grind part of the goal and used it to encourage me into wider play than I might otherwise have done. ED Exploration Buddy is handy for Exo and EDDiscovery I also use te Market Connector so my results go to places like Inara. It is annoying having to look stuff up but that info can drive you on to some more interesting experiences. It's a great game and even grinding for Engineers shouldn't be treated as a problem because it diverts you from route 1 and pushes you to do different things.

Well there's some absolute bullshittery in the game that I just experienced...

Fleet carrier parked in a hostile power system, I get attacked and my carrier does nothing, I attempt to fight back and my own carrier kills me for attempting to defend myself, I remember a few threads about it when they first came out and figured they would have fixed that absolute rubbish by now. Powerplay just seems to be more grief than it's worth to me lol.

it does have weird foibles but in general power play is 90% plain more profit for what you do (and some unique gear) and only 10% hassle

I would say it's a no brainer to join up. just pick a power which matches what you like. (I use LYR due to trade and exploration perks)

I'd disagree after my experience this week, it's just not worth the hassle especially if you like to move around the bubble a lot.

what ever floats your boat. it's not like you need to do it. I only joined PP for the 1st time a couple of months ago.
I want the special frag canons however (and I picked a power which only drops them at level 91 :D )

I did all the powers one after another 2 or 3 years ago, took all but a year to go through them all in order to get the modules. Got a stash of all the special modules now sitting on storage Eagles on stations dotted around my home base, so they don't confuse me by being at my actual home base. I haven't gone back to the powers since though, but I gather it is more convenient now if you are just after the modules.

yeah power play 2 is simple now.

no merit degradation so just by playing the game you will eventually level up and unlock stuff if you play in and around your powers areas.

also every power unlocks every weapon it's just that some give different gear sooner than others.

Well a few more milestones this week. I started the new CG with my Type-9 which I hated, 20,000tonnes back and forth in that to my FC was a drag :-( So Id ecided to commit to getting the Imperial Clipper Cutter and pushed through the last 4 ranks to Duke I must have spent over £200m on support missions whilst blasting around doing courier stuff. But finished that yesterday evening and bought a Clipper which was much nicer for unloading the FC. Only fly in the onitment was I got interdicted in the new Clipper Cutter just as someone turned up at the front door. I evaded then dashed for the visitor but before I could get back I was reinterdicted and killed. In retrospect I know I should have logged out but several things winging around my mind at same time. Doh!
Finishing unloading my FC completed my Elite in Trader and 20k of titanium must have brought in close to 800m split between carrier profit and pilot profit. So paid for all that Reputation grinding and the Clipper Cutter.

edit: got Clipper and Cutter confused in my head. The BIG ONE the Cutter :-D

if you dont mind me asking why did you use your fleet carrier? it seems a very inefficient way of doing it, there are heaps of supply of stuff within 40LY of the CG target.....
