**** The Official Google Pixel 4 Thread ****

128GB of storage only though is a letdown considering they added new video features in the camera aimed at cinematography so making use of these features often will mean you're certain to hit that storage limit soon and eat into cloud storage which is no longer unlimited which it was on the Pixel 4.

Google have said they expect to sell only 800k Pixel 5s too which kinda tells you why the specs are so lacking for a £600 phone.

everything is is in the cloud pay £2.50 a month and you can have more gigs than you would ever need. 128gb is perfectly fine for me. i don't see the specs lacking for £600. seems like a good price to me. seeing as they chuck in a pair of bose headphones that sell for £225 - £250

I suppose the Bose can be sold for a decent sum too. I do like the Pixel 5 a lot, just the storage would bother me. I already pay £16 a year for 100GB of Drive storage. My 200GB SD card is currently 50% full too for example.

As a quick heads-up re: the Bose headphones, when Huawei gave them away with the P20 Pro it caused prices to crash on eBay etc. So if you're looking to sell them on, just be aware that you might not get as much as you expect. Really depends on how much this offer boosts supply.

Same with the give away last year of the chrome book.

Terrible event, I thought. Spend 11 minutes on the speaker, including some chap in a warehouse playing his keyboard with his kid on the drums and then 3 or 4 minutes of Gomez basically doing a bad YouTube Music advert, what a waste of time. The 'specs' of the Pixel 5 were then on screen for less than 3 seconds...

Yep the worst event I could ever have imagine tbh. They kept the pixel section to the end as its why people are there, but it was so basic, devoid of anything interesting. The really did not sell the phone at all.

I guess Google know p5 is a write off. No XL version. Just 2 colours. No advertising for it. This one will sell badly. Same camera in the 4a 5g. Is that also the same camera from the 4a, which is the same camera from the 4?

I don't even recall them mentioning the 90hz screen, though by that point my attention had wandered. If it had been an Apple presentation, we'd have heard in great detail about the Super Fusion Retina XDR Pro-motion screen, along with a story about how it had allowed a blind man to see again.

Yet still the arguably best camera on a phone. The software tricks have been updated.

No.

Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G add a second camera; a 16mp ultrawide lens.

The naming of these phones is really quite odd. 4a 5G has some nice upgrades over the regular 4a, which make it more than just a 5G variant. Pixel 5, on the other hand, is basically just a 4a 5G with wireless charging, IP68 rating, 90Hz display and 2GB extra RAM.

I'm not talking from personal experience, since I don't own a Pixel, however I have made the following observations:

The Pixel 4 came out and reviewers said the camera was up there with the best. DXO Mark (just one source out of many, of course) has it languishing somewhere in the lower end of the top-twenty. Then came the Pixel 4a (with pretty much the same capabilities as the full fat 4) and suddenly it's being compared to phones in its price bracket, where reviewers say its 'good for its price'. They don't say 'it's a flagship quality camera on a £350 phone'. It's good for its price.

I'm aware of Google's much-touted image processing software, but it seems the only people shouting loudly are Pixel owners and reviewers (who on the one hand say the Pixel 4 is flagship, but the 4a is only a good low-mid ranger). It's like the Pixel = Camera thing has been said so often that it's become part of the collective folk lore, ignoring that other manufacturers have moved on as well.

Maybe I'm wrong - I'm not particularly looking to poke the nest.

Looking at the comparisons of the 5, 4a & 4XL.

With the recent price drop on the 4XL I think looks a better bargain & phone than all the others.

What do you think?

Forget dxo and all that scoring malarkey.

If you want a phone that nails focus, has great hdr and colours and consistently performs in day and low light, Pixel is king.

If you want versatility with more lenses then it's not for you. I miss my Pixel 3 camera quality but I've gained a quality ultra wide and a quality macro. Plus the handset itself, the OnePlus 8 Pro, crushes the pixel.

Google care less about phone hardware now than ever before remember, software and AI is where they master.

And they will come to Pixel 4 too so it could be debated that the Pixel 4a is the superior phone in fact for the price. They even said this in the event and all the samples shown stated "Taken with Pixel", not specifically Pixel 5. Google are pretty much 95% software focused now as they know they cannot ever compete in the phone hardware arena any more due to immense competition from all other players.

So my pixel 4a has shipped, due to arrive today I believe. Whilst I'm still happy with the concept of having a 4a (otherwise, I wouldn't have pre-ordered one) I feel the sudden arrival of the Pixel 5 to have ebbed away slightly at my excitement of a new gadget. Normally you get a few months before something its superseded.

I'd return it personally. 4a 5G is a decent step-up, and a pretty similar price if you factor in selling the free headphones.

Did they say it will come to the pixel 4? Hdr live preview didn't come to the pixel 3 when it debuted on the 4.

Also pixel 4a while a good phone for the budget conscience, is not a superior phone in any way, it's budget to the core. Its laggy and bland. https://youtu.be/7K3Xxz4a_UQ. Check at the 5 min mark lagfest.

Pixel 5 has a nice balance of a responsive screen, performance and premium build. I'd buy it if it wasn't for my current phone.

i think i like the direction google have taken. i
anyone know what the warranty given is for the 3a phones when direct from google? was bought 17/07 2019, but their website is totally unclear and i'm going in circles trying to talk to someone.
