***THE OFFICIAL GTX480/470 END USER REVIEW THREAD***

got 2 GTX 480's in my new machine, very loud and very hot.

Does anyone have a good solution to dual SLI 480's?

I am going to enquire about a liquid cooling system, good idea?
Replace the stock TIM with something better then ensure you have a case fan or 2 blowing onto the cards & they will be fine. Also, in the near future Zalman or someone else are releasing a HSF which will make the card a lot cooler/quiet. It can only be a month or so from release......

Just curious, how are they situated on your motherboard?

Are they butted up close to each other or have a PCI slot gap between them?

I would imagine having both tight together would generate a lot of heat and increase the fan speed?

no PCI gap they are right next to each other (built by ocuk, dont blame me lol)

I think the surface area of the heatsink is screaming out to be cooled so having the heatsink completely obstructed by the other card is not a good idea. And I guess all that heat is almost touching the PCB of the other card which does not sound good:eek:

I have just one card with 2 fans blowing air at the heatsink which keeps the temps at idle to just 40c and around 80c max ingame. As its this cool I dont really hear the fan noise at all... my case fans make more noise to be honest.

my GPU's idle around 65-70 and go up to about 90-95 while gaming. I might see if I can have them 1 slot apart later today

I would have thought if it is possible you can space them apart it can only help cooling surely ???

Ouch !! My single Zotac 480GTX sits at 42C idle and the most i have seen under load is 76C and this is with my own fan profile using MSI Afterburner.
I would definitely look into some better cooling bro, try taking the side off the case and see how the temps go then, maybe you can reduce it with some strategically placed case fans.

Otherwise it's water cooling for you my boy ;)

after buying evga gtx 480 when it was released first

i bough my custom water cooling it cost me about 400 pounds but i am so glad

it never exceed 55 thermochill pa120.4 is really beast oo i forgot it oced 801 da 201 gb/sec memory

3-way-SLI (GTX 470) - measured with EVGA Precision. Stock cooling.
Room temperature 25,9*c

Call of Juarez DX10 1920x1200 4xSSAA 3x loops!
Temperatures + fanspeed monitored ingame.
GPU1 = 87*c - fanspeed 82%
GPU2 = 85*c - fanspeed 82%
GPU3 = 85*c - fanspeed 82%

TTI (Time To Idle) 5min. No activity
GPU1 = 67*c - fanspeed 45%
GPU2 = 66*c - fanspeed 44%
GPU3 = 65*c - fanspeed 45%

TTI (Time To Idle) 10min. No activity
GPU1 = 62*c - fanspeed 41%
GPU2 = 59*c - fanspeed 40%
GPU3 = 60*c - fanspeed 40%

Wow, with all this hot weather that we're having anyone would think Fermis would be fryin', but actually they're not!

Although I haven't got around to doing any hardcore gaming yet, I must say my initial impressions are very, very good.

I ordered the Ultima Viper system from OcUK, choosing the PoV GTX 480. This system comes in the Antec 902 case, which may explain the coolness that my 480 has experienced so far, seeing as the 902 has some serious cooling ability.

Anyway, with ambient temperatures of around 25/26c (plus my room has direct sunlight shining into it for most of the day) my card hasn't yet encountered anything higher than 60c after messing about in RailWorks for a short while.

I am using MSI Afterburner to monitor temps and adjust the fan speed, and I believe that if I adjust the fan speed correctly, I should be able to keep the temperatures within perfectly reasonable limits. The 60c I reported was with the fan manually set to 65%, which is totally inaudible behind the case fans, which are quieter than my old system anyway.

Very happy so far... :)

I have just done a 2 hour online session of bad company 2 and both my 480s
were hitting 90c they never seem to go any higher no matter what the weather.

The fans on both cards are on auto to.

I think playing BFBC2 is a very good test of these cards. I get around a max of 85c while playing BFBC2 and around 40c - 45c idle

Just a quick play with SLI on the GTX 480:

My first go with SLI. I haven't clocked both cards that high (825Mhz gpu /2050Mhz memory) as one card is still on air. I should be getting another waterblock in around a weeks time, when I do I will push it further. :)

Does anyone else here use the Prolimatech MK-13 for cooling their GTX 470? Apparently it works for that, but not the 480 (480 heats up too much for it apparently).

I am thinking about getting one GTX 470 now, and another a month or so down the line for SLI. Anyone report on what the 470 runs like @ 1680 x 1050 (I only own a 22" monitor).

Is everyone happy with their 470? I don't think I can justify the extra £120-160 for a 480 sadly.
