Hmmm why are reports on noise differing so drastically?

I'm vaguely interested in the 470. Is it noticably quieter than the 480 when in high detail games such as crysis for e.g. ?

I'm a bit of a noise nazi and i hated the sound of the 8800gt (single slot) as it had an annoying whine but the 8800gts's i found almost silent.

any thoughts would be appreciated! thanks

I think they're differing due to how people are configuring them. When I got mine I tried it with standard auto fan settings and found that the fan too far too long to ramp up and when it did it would ramp up hard. I've used Afterburner to set my own custom auto fan curve and now in most games it doesn't get to above 66-68% which is no noisier than my old GTX280.

They are much noisier than the 5000 series cards, but with the right control not much noisier than the previous generation of NV cards.
 
Hey guys, I got a question... Would my OCZ ModXstream 700W PSU power a GTX 480?, because I'm gonna upgrade my GPU this week, so if it will be good enough for a 480, then I know its good enough for pretty much every other GPU, thanks

That's a bonus then, I had an older 780 watt modxstream which only had a couple of six pin pci-e connectors.

Should have guessed they would have updated them by now, the one I had was a pile of turd tbh, buzzed like a biatch under load.

Totally agree, Many who have actually purchased these cards explain there are hardly any noise issues, but there are the odd few that do:confused:

Is this because their cards cooling is not that good causing high temps making fan increase speed?
Is it some brands have their cards configured differently:confused:

All I can say is since the purchase of my Palit brand card its been great:)

With one of these stood in front of the computer .. no probs.



Had a room temp of 29 yesterday and never saw the 480 go above 90 with some hefty usage. Yeah it runs hot.

Considering you had a 29 degree room temp, a GPU temp of 90 is very good. That fan in front of your case is doing a good job.
 
Highest i have seen mine go is 75C with 85% fan speed and that is in a small box room that was 31C over the weekend.

Still trying to figure out what all the fuss is about with these cards running hot and noisy. No problems with either here, fantastic cards actually.
