***The Official Guitar Thread***

I'm gobsmacked about the Lawyer/Accountant reference about PRS guitars because I've never heard of it before.
I was around 27 when they first came out and most of my musician friends bought them and still have them and I'm talking 100s of people.
I can honestly say that none of them are Lawyers or Accountants.
I did play in a band with two Lawyers/Solicitors who called the band Legal Thieves.

Its perfection in its design.

I was so wrong, at first I thought it was ugly, it was dull, it was strange looking. Now I realise it doesn't need to be fancy, it doesn't need to be complicated, it's wood and string so just keep it simple.

You get a slab of wood, stick a neck on it, round off the corners, cut off a bit for the higher fret access and Bob's your uncle.

Stop feeding my Tele gas! I think the main reason I don’t have an electric is because I can’t choose between a Tele and and a LP and I know I will only get one past the boss!

Erm...between the 2, the Telecaster I think I prefer more but Les Paul is the boss and icon. It’s harder to find a good Les Paul, especially if you want a Gibson plus it’ll cost you probably double. A tele is simple, you can even make it yourself. You don’t need to pay top dollar for it.

It’s never going to be a Gibson! I could afford one but it would be totally unjustifiable for my talent! The boss would prefer an LP they look prettier on the wall but I love the classic simplicity of a slightly beat up butterscotch or red Tele! One day I’ll make up my mind and actually commit!

Talent and possession of an instrument does not go hand in hand here either but it doesn’t stop me :p

The Gibson indeed is prettier...up to you!

I hardly play my Gibson LP Zebrawood....I don’t like playing it sat down....My Gibson SG and Telecaster get the most play...

what do you have now ?
I've never owned an electric worthy of being called a guitar! I have an encore start copy gathering dust at my parents house that was bought as a package in my youth. I play acoustic and probably play my cheapo Ibanez parlour more than anything as it hangs on my kitchen diner wall! I've played friends electrics (mixture of high end stuff and decent middle ground) and it is certainly an itch I will scratch eventually I just think about it too much. I'm never going to spend the sort of money some of you guys do as like I said my playing can't justify it and I really don't want a case beauty that I'm worried about bashing or to scared to let the kids play.

If you have children and worried about it being bashed, don't get a Gibson. it'll get decapitated in no time.

There you go, decision made! :D

I would get that Encore Strat out and give it some TLC and some new strings and a setup...IIRC the early encore starts were 3 chunks of solid wood and are certainly fine with a good setup and fresh strings....

My first guitar was a Hohner Strat copy and I played that thing 12 hours a day growing up...Most people make the mistake that buying a so called “Proper” guitar will make them a guitar player...

Fact is playing the guitar is just that...you just play regardless of what you have...I got my first Gibson when I was 18 bought after 3 years solid practice on my crappy Hohner Strat copy...

Just because you have the gear doesn't mean you have any idea....

The start just doesn't do it for me but you are right I should at least clean it up and play it to see if an electric will actually get played!

I'm firmly convinced a better guitar won't make me a better player when ever I get gas for a new acoustic I just let my teacher play mine to remind me it's me that's the limiting factor!

I like letting my kids play the various instruments in the house thankfully none are worth more than a couple of hundred quid hopefully it will encourage them to play something as music is such a joy. Don't think I will ever have a case queen I like to have something I can just grab, my classical lives in it's case but more because I don't feel the urge to play it as often.

There's a level somewhere around the £200 mark where actually having a guitar more expensive than that is probably worth it even for a beginner, but anything from there on upwards is such a ridiculous case of diminishing returns in my experience. Nice to have for sure, like a sports car, but it won't really get you from A to B significantly better than a more modest car

If I were you I'd probably get something like a Mexican Tele and swap out the bridge pickup for a lil' 59 humbucker - great versatility then for whatever genre takes your fancy. Equally one of the more recent Epiphone LP's would probably come with coil taps on both pickups, I'm not sure why but I didn't find the sound of them quite satisfied the single coil sound I would want but it's not terrible. An LP might be better if you are a metal fan because it'll likely be chunkier which leads to better riffing

Get a Strat, the Strat has always been and always will be known as the Swiss Army Knife of guitars.
