***The Official Guitar Thread***

As above - not anywhere close to £20k but I have my 3 guitars hung on the wall behind me... it's a stud/partition wall so what I did was get a good solid piece of 1x4" which is mounted horizontally and screwed into the wall studs in 3 places using 2 decently long thick screws each, and then the guitar hangers are each attached to that with pretty big screws too (that technically stick through it slightly and into the plasterboard) - no way would it come down. Have had them hung there for years with no problems - I suspect the only situation you might want to be careful of with hanging would be if the room they are in experiences very large fluctuations in humidity and/or temperature (but that is kind of a problem for guitars regardless)

yeah I've heard the case is meant to be the best place too, but guitar shops pretty much have every guitar from £50 to £5k+? hanging on the wall, well more suspended no touching the wall

Depends if your guitar is for playing or looking at / hoarding to be honest... I want them hanging because I pick them up to play them often enough that getting them in and out of a case would get annoying

My mate says he expects all the guitars in his shop to be on a wall no longer than three months.

The thought of keeping a Gibson out terrifies me, stand or hangers.
Guitars are instruments. Would you keep a piano covered over? Serious question.

Of course luthiers are going to say that the best place to keep them is in a case... you can’t damaged it in a case ;)

I can only speak from experience but my 59 LP custom is an expensive instrument and the thought of keeping it in a case and having to deal with the faff of getting it out to play it far outweighs the downsides. Not to mention that the more instruments you have the more cases you end up with... any more than 3 becomes a serious space hog.

My Strat is out but not the Gibson and as for piano, I'd close the lid when I'm not playing it if i had one.

This 100%... I think quite a few in this thread really focus more on guitars as some kind of art piece collectors object to take photographs of rather than the musical tool that they actually are :p

I prefer my guitars to be back in their case after use. It doesn't get in the way of me playing them.

I will on the odd occasion leave my partscaster or MiM strat out on the stand. It's a Hercules stand which locks the headstock in place, any other stand that doesn't do this, I just don't trust.

Well, as instruments go; they don't come much more stunning than a guitar! Got to admit, they are extremely photogenetic :p

I put a nice careless ding in my R9 a few weeks ago on the side of the body. Lifted it not quite high enough over a table.... and smack. It happens. Unless your guitars live in their case.

A few years back I bought a strat off of some guy, I went over to his house to collect it and he had literally every single cupboard and wardrobe packed with vertically stacked guitar cases, all Fenders. Mostly special editions and anniversary editions. I can only guess at the value of guitars stashed away in this house. A retired guy, he went on to say that he doesn't even play guitar and is a bass player but likes to collect Fenders. As expensive hobbies go, this tops it for anything I've ever seen IRL, but each to their own... I guess!

Sounds like a decent retirement income lol. Sell one of when short of cash.

Guitars kept away in their case seems such a waste and a faff. They are their to be enjoyed, so enjoy them.

I’m intending on wall hanging my bunch in the new place. The only reason to keep them away is a case for the sake of space / neatness.

If I used an expensive guitar professionally I'd want it kept safe, sound and stable in a case. But collectors will hang to display their collection, and hobbyist players will want the guitar within easy reach positioned 'casually' in the background of Zoom calls. ;-)

Ok, a case isn't any great hardship to fetch and open, but life is full of easy distractions and excuses not to play, so my main guitar is on a stand within arm's reach and the other three -- all very playable but none anything special -- are hung up in the next room, out of the way, but taking up a lot useable space in a small house than a stack of cases.

Mind you, my one decent case is empty, so my storage efficiency argument has a flaw. I should fill it with something useful like loo roll and pasta. :-)

I never play guitar because in my piddly house it’s either been a) a neat relaxing room or b) a chaos of wires. Having your guitar within arms reach is definitely the way to go.

Dedicated guitar room in the new place :)

:) never a truer word said.

You have summed it up, not taking the last few months into consideration, working musicians will keep their guitars in cases with perhaps and odd cheaper guitar close to them.
Collectors want them up on the wall.
I've PM'd 10 working musicians and none keep their guitars out, one of them said "no way I'm hanging a £3,500 PRS from the wall".
Later on today I'm going to start a Facebook post on a large site I run and see what the response is.

I only know one working guitarist and he has all his on the wall in his music room all are well scared he treats the as tools so dings scratches etc are Par for the course.

The key here is actually easy access.

If I am a studio musician, I would no doubt have all my instruments in the room, out of cases, on a rack and stands (I still don’t trust wall hangers)

If I am a gigging musician, I would have my guitars in cases, because I would play them at gigs, so they are always packed and ready to go.

It’s the main reason why I packed my photography gear in my cases, locked. They are ready to go and safe. If they are scattered around the house I would almost always guarantee to forget something. The last thing I need is to forget an important piece of gear.

If I am a studio photographer then the camera would probably never leave the tripod.

So, if I am (well, I am) a hobbyist, I understand both why you have your guitar out but I also understand why you would put it in cases. That’s why I have 1 guitar out, I can only play 1 at a time anyway. I don’t need to look at them really. Plus it takes up space if they are out since the cases already taking up space.
