I can understand this actually. To move Apples business even further, in a quite saturated market they need to make inroads into india and china, together with developing their service products.

The £649 model will sell very well. I think it's about getting even more people into the ecosystem and maybe trying to tempt android users back over.

I'd buy the 12 mini

I don't think a phone counts as a luxury item people can't afford or a status symbol lol. Head right over to the Motors sections to see the real status objects. Just not everyone cares about all the bells and whistles. CEO of my company who is probably on triple what I earn, at a guess, and she is still using some 4 year old Samsung device and if I can afford a 11PM I'm sure as **** she can afford several - she just doesn't care.

I agree that not everyone cares about the bells and whistles, but the iPhone has always had that stigma of being a status symbol device.

While now, if the rumoured prices are true, then the recent upturn of Android users who are now turning to iOS lends credence to the point that if previous iPhones had been priced like the SE 2020 or what the 5.4" iPhone 12 will be, then I'd be confident saying they'd probably would have bought an iPhone instead.

Let's be honest, there's always been part of the Android community has turn their noses up at Apple/iPhone users because they could get 12gb RAM, 256gb base storage etc, on their Android phones for half the price...

Do people really see a phone as a status object though? Maybe because I've always had an iPhone since the 3G as my second contract phone but I really don't see them as a status object. They're not unobtainable for most working people. There's pairs of trainers which I want that can cost more than a top end iPhone. That to me is a status/flex thing. A phone? not really. But I guess we all have different values on things. With the amount of use I get out of a phone I actually think they're pretty well priced.

I don't think price, for most working people, is as big of a part of it as some believe. Some just prefer the open nature of Android. Androids are killing it at the cheaper end of the spectrum (I find all these Chinese phones a lot more interesting than the flagships from Samsung/Apple etc) so I can see why Apple are getting involved with the SE but for lots - my friends for example, they just don't care about Apple devices and some of them earn more than me

Maybe not so much now, but certainly in previous years people did. I remember getting the iPhone 4 on launch and when I showed it to people they were in awe of it. This was the early retina days don't forget. Someone classed phones as white goods these days which i think is fair, but Apple as a company have the badge of being a premium company with premium prices to boot. The touted prices will only be for the base level storage options, once you start going higher then you watch the prices rocket.

I know plenty of people that jumped from their iPhones to Samsungs purely because the contract prices were a million times cheaper than the iPhone offerings and have stayed. That's what swaying me to a move back over if I'm being honest and I'm in a decent paying job and we as a family are deep in the Apple ecosystem.

Yeah iPhone contract prices are quite ridiculous.

I remember the iPhone 11 Pro Max was £120 a month on EE for the 512GB model which is now still £104 a month with £60 up front.

This is why I just hang back a few generations on phones and use a sim only contract, £20 for 105GB data on their fastest 4G and I got £130 cashback. I've been using a 7 plus up until last week where I found an excellent deal on an iPhone X that has 100% battery and looks as it would new, all accessories unused and still has warranty until October :)

I think it will definitely tempt the Chinese yes, and perhaps the Indian market. The oneplus phones are doing great in India so they’ll have a hard time, but I honestly don’t think they’ve make a bad decision with the 12 mini. It looks like a great phone at a (in 2020, dare I say it) respectable price.

It will also tempt current iPhone owners who have long wanted a high end phone in a smaller form factor.

Also, new apple customers are also more likely to start looking at other apple products too. I don’t think the Apple Watch for example can work on a non apple phone.

I think some people most definitely view it as some sort of status object. I mean remember the airpods when they came out and the stigma they had around them? Not sure if you've seen the memes, but essentially if you bought airpods it was a "flex" and if you didn't have them you were viewed as being broke and "not cool" as stupid as that sounds. I think iphones are somewhat in the same bracket.

Of course as you mentioned your boss, some people really don't care what phone they have, they just want the basics done and don't care for much else. But if you are someone who's somewhat interested in phone tech most people will tend to edge towards the best of whats to offer, unless of course the pricing is more than what you can comfortably afford (which there are plenty of people I understand)

Definitely, I think the countries where androids were most prevalent i.e countries that have a lower national wage like many asian countries, apple products are viewed as status symbols there. So if they come more affordable, I can almost definitely see more and more people switching from android over there to iphones.

The problem with UK/US etc are that if you are a solid android user (especially if you regularly buy flagships) then i think its hard for them to switch over to iphones.

What Id like to see, in order of importance for next years model:

1) Much smaller notch, or no notch at all
2) 120Hz display
3) USB-C
4) 5G
5) 6/8gb of RAM
6) Base storage 128gb
7) Faster charging/Faster wireless charging
8) 1440p display
9) Reverse wireless charging

Let us pray

Looks like 128gb base storage has also been more or less confirmed as well!

So out of my 9 point wishlist, only 3, 7, 8 and 9 looks like it won't be happening - Which i'm more than happy with! 7,8,9 were all fairly low priority for me anyway, the only bummer being no USB-C!

Up until last month i'd been using the same Sim only deal from Three for almost 10 years, it was £15 a month for unlimited everything and it couldn't be beaten by any other network provider. The only reason i changed was because browsing on Three at work was painfully slow so i swapped over to EE.

Haven't had a contract since the iPhone 4 which i think was 2011, always bought them sim free since then. :)

Looking at the prices on the US apple store, we are £50 more expensive over here so i can safely guess that prices will be:

iPhone 5.4" £699
iPhone 12 Max £799
iPhone 12 Pro £1049
iPhone 12 Pro Max £1149

Pretty much matching prices for the iPhone 11 Pro and Max.

Those memes were always what teenagers made though - and they're thick at the best of times anyway :p So perhaps in teenager circles where they may not have a steady income, it could be a status thing. I don't think I've ever seen a working adult be impressed, speaking from a status angle, by a phone. If anything when i got the original AirPods around the launch time my friends thought I was an idiot for buying them but both the AP and now APP are perfect for my needs (I can use them under a motorcycle helmet) - better and more expensive alternatives out there too.

The prices are only ridiculous if you buy them direct from the network, that’s the same for Android at launch. Buy them from a dealer and you get it was cheaper. The difference is that Apple tends to hold its value over its lifecycle where as a typical android phone just doesn’t.

I got my 11pro at launch and it cost less over the term of the contract than buying outright and a sim only. The service worked out at around £8-9 a month for £30gb after the cost of the phone which is way cheaper than anything you could get on the market at the time on the network I wanted or one of its virtual networks.

If so, what's your point?

I'm sure there are a lot of people who bought a cheaper product because they can't afford a very expensive model.

And there are people who look at value for money and think they can get more bang for their buck with an Android device.

If you're an Apple fan then you should be very happy with anyone switching, or do you personally see your iPhone as a status symbol and does opening this up to more people in some way offend you?

In Europe the iPhone still only has 30% market share I believe. Apple has to open up their range and offer cheaper devices to continue to grow and get more people in the ecosystem buying apps, music subscriptions, movie rentals etc.

You've made this point numerous times and I'm not really sure what you're showing, other than the fact that people take price into account when they buy things?
