*** The official late 2020 Mac mini thread (it has the M1 chip and everything!) ***

I use a mac mini 2018 as my desktop computer, I'll miss this gen as I think the i7 is still similar general cpu perf, obviously slower on the cherry picked benches and I do a lot of 4k video editing....so I use lots of the 64gb ram I use now....also no egpu support is a massive fail for us professionals :( I have a vega gpu attached to mine.

Sure the M1 has video editing acceleration but I don't hold up much hope when I'm editing a 500-700gb project that's all h264/h265 4k. Sure proxy etc etc but not always possible with some stuff due to fast storage big enough

Yeah a $700 decide isn't really up for the tasks you describe. More like Mac Pro territory.

Yeah the mini I use now does the job just fine, I'm sure M1 has good video acceleration, but the limited ram is too much of a barrier.

Next gen will definitely sort out the ram issue. I personally am waiting for the M2-based 32-inch iMac with a 6K screen (16-cores, plus dedicated GPU and 64GB of ram). I may be dreaming but I hope Apple makes this device.

Chances are in future I could see them getting rid of the efficiency cores for desktops as battery life and heat are less of a problem compared to portables.

Having 8-16 of the high power cores would be good.

Yeah, good point. When you think about it, why are they using M1 in the Mac mini? It doesn't have to worry about battery life.

I think they will stick to the efficiency cores in laptops. They're pushing for mac developers to use efficiency cores in their codes, makes no sense to get rid of them soon after that.

They have no other chip :D I do expect them to get rid of efficiency cores in all desktop macs though, once they're up and running with all their chip tiers.

We hope so don't we, but I do have flashbacks to the 6 years where the Mac Mini was basically hamstrung with terrible dual-core CPUs until it's 'refresh'.

Yeah, I think about the base spec 2014 Mac Mini that was just god awful, and worry if this will be viewed as similar in a couple years.
Really looking forward to seeing some hands on reviews.

Historically, first gen Apple products also get the fewest of OS upgrade cycles. I don't expect Apple to drop support for these before they completely drop Intel support, but they'll likely get fewer years than second and third gen devices if history is to repeat itself.

Yeah, always the risk of being an early adopter I guess. But for less than a grand for a Apple Device it's not a bad deal, in comparison to other vendors yes probably, but historically Macs are super expensive.

The Mac Mini is very tempting because these things hold their value so well, it won't even be that much of a loss if you sell it a year later. I'm still resisting though :D

:D

It'll do for a good little devbox/project box for me even if I don't end up using it as the daily driver.

A lot of empty space in that Mac mini. Shame no internal upgrade or ram upgrade. Wonder how much having a fan will make a difference to performance.

I agree, would be interesting to see if they do a design overhaul on it, or if the beefier CPUs that are surely coming to Mac Pro / 16" / iMac are bigger overall boards.

I guess the MBA fanless V fan will be interesting. Guessing it will just sustain 3.1ghz for longer if not permanently.
Good bye Intel thermal throttling.
