***The Official LG Nexus 4 Thread***

Would love a Nexus 4 but I'm thinking by the time these are available again generally (which could be 2 months!) will there be something better out?

HTC butterfly or the M7 or whatever it is they will be bringing over here will be out in a month or two (1080P screen, better camera, more storage, better build, better battery life etc. etc.), but HTC's support has gone down the drain lately so I wouldn't really recommend them and no doubt they will launch an improved version 4 months down the line.....

And afaik, there isn't anything else that will be out to compete with it, GS 4 won't be till May or June. Sony's phones are meh and their support is awful too. Motorola's RAZR HD/MAXX should be here in January I think, which look very good on the whole but again Motorola don't seem to care about the UK, so support will be shocking etc.

pffffff

Mine also arrived today, had an email a day or two ago (presumably so did many other people) to say they were investigating reports of orders not being shipped.

First impressions are pretty good, it's very quick, Android 4.2 has some nice improvements. The screen seems good, albeit coming from an S2 with AMOLED it does look a bit washed out and has that typical LCD look to it. No doubt I'll adjust within a couple of days.

Just need to find a case for it now, something similar to the Samsung Vent case for the S2 would be good.

Indeed jubei.

Besides, I don't see how stock android is an advantage personally, the only good thing about it IMO is the holo theme throughout, IMO the apps are too basic and not feature rich enough especially the camera app, it pales in comparison to touchwiz and sense camera app, touchwiz has a lot of good features these days like the multi-view, smart stay tweaks (although you can get these as apps now). Any bloat on the phone isn't a problem either, ever since ICS you can disable most of the stuff anyway so they won't use any resources at all and won't show throughout the phone.

Plus nowadays you can make your phone look/act more or less like stock android, can change the home and lock screen to stock android, download the stock android calendar, SMS, dialer, browser, gallery etc. apps and even replace the status bar/notification tray with the stock look (but those status bar apps are a bit buggy still) without having to root, afaik you can't do the same with sense, touchwiz etc. apps only make apps look like them via go sms etc.

People quote that as a plus a lot yet all root their phones and use custom roms anyway so they have no advantage over say an s3 running a custom rom no?

My phone is completely stock, non rooted. :p I've even kept with the stock apps for the most part, just added ones I preferred. I see no reason to change it, I find it the best looking theme I've come across, and the phone does absolutely everything I want it to do, perfectly.

I hated Touchwiz on my S3.

Everything about this post is even more wrong than Jimmy Saville running a nursery.

Custom ROMs built from AOSP are generally buggy, incomplete or contain work around hacks to get features working. If it's not a Nexus then generally speaking the binaries from manufacturers never get distributed until the manufacturer release a leak or final firmware.

Not only that but you also have poor platform/hardware documentation from the likes of Samsung and Broadcom, leaving half working Bluetooth like when people got Android 4.0 "running" on the Galaxy SII.

This isn't the case with the Nexus, look how quickly the Galaxy Nexus had 4.2 pushed to it.

I used to be one of the flashaholics until I realised it was a pointless exercise that results in instability.

lol i dont custom rom either mate. My point is that a lot of people do and as such they have the same bugs/software that people with other phones have. If you check back in the thread before all the shipping stuff you will see plenty about people having put PA on their phone.

There's more and more apps which will not run on a rooted phone for "security" reasons....

I have been lucky enough to get a 16GB version last month and for the time I have been using it, I have loved it. I upgraded from an S2, and the Nexus 4 is a real power house. Its sexy, fast and efficient.

However.......

I now can't use it.

I was at work the other day and placed the phone flat on a flat plastic cable trunking where I have always put my other phones as it is the only place I can get signal. You know the sort that carry data cables and suchlike. I went and sat at my computer (approx 7ft away) and after a couple of minutes I heard a 'crack'.

Looked over and my phone was face down after falling from around 3.5 feet (floor was concrete under the lino).

I turned it over and the screen was completely smashed. It was still working in so much as I could see my lock screen, but the touch feature of the screen wont work so I cant do anything with the phone.

How did this happen exactly? Well, I am convinced my phone can move itself when placed flat on some surfaces. Maybe due to power causing some kind of micro vibrations, or heat causing some kind of thin air pocket underneath it.

I first noticed it on the arm of the leather sofa at home, which is square and flat. My phone kept falling off on its own. I just figured maybe the arm of the sofa isn't as square as it looked. I also had the same phenomenon on a friends sofa, but to be fair that was a bit more curved.

So anyway, the bottom line is that there is no reason why my phone would have fallen from the position I placed it. My Blackberry work phone was on the same cable trunking right by it and that didn't end up on the floor. There was only me in the office (its very small) and there were no other people about. Vibration and Haptic feedback were off on both phones and prior to the incident I hadn't received any calls, texts or notifications.

There seems to be no information about this phenomenon but I know for certain the only way my phone could have fallen off a flat surface that was as wide as the phone would be if it somehow moved itself. :(

Does anyone else know about this, or has anyone had similar experiences?

Oh, and just a word on the phone serial number! If you ever need to send your phone back to LG they will need the IMEI and the serial number. The serial number is stamped on your sim tray, and is barely visible to the naked eye. If you do not have perfect eye sight and lighting conditions, I recommend keeping a magnifying glass handy just in case! :p (or use a stereo microscope like I did :D )

Does anyone know how much it is likely to cost me to have the screen assembly replaced? There does not appear to be any other physical damage to the external of the phone, but I suppose LG can make up any stories they like about the internal. I cannot help thinking this is going to turn into an expensive 'accident' if I send it to LG. In view of that, does anyone know of a reliable repair shop in the Stoke/Stafford area that carries Nexus 4 screens?

Cheers

firstly sorry for the loss, i can imagine you must be gutted, how much are LG charging for a repair?

and YES i agree, they move on there own accord! i have dropped mine at least 4 times, in the month or so i have had it, compared to my last phone which would be once or twice a year.

you must have just got an unlucky landing.

the shiny slick glass makes them slide off anything, seen it go flying off my wonky kitchen table, my desk and heard it fall from other locations i used to prop my phone around the house and office

I think it's $140 for screen replacement in the US, so I'd imagine £140+ over here.

The phone is very slippery it seems (due to the insanely smooth glass back), and will move 'on it's own' on a not perfectly level surface.

The reason you lost the ability to use the phone is due to this in-cell touch (aka zero gap) technology. On phones without that, the digitizer can often survive a screen break.

I put PA on mine because that is how I want my phone. Just so happens it is easier & as far as im concerned not buggy than it was when I used it on the S2.

Any custom ROM on a Nexus will be better than a closed sourced proprietary Samsung phone running a custom ROM.

i have a few backup phones, i used to use on a messy night out, but having the mirco sim means this is not possible, just found some on ebay

The other reason for a custom rom is to get rid of the network crap they stick on there too. My desire HD was Android+Sense+orange crap. Now i just run vanilla ICS on it and its so much more responsive.

I do agree though that you look some of the whizzyness that Sense provided, and the camera options are very limited.
