It sounds like you need to install the google USB driver then enter fastboot. https://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.htmlno ive not, think i will phone google tomorrow.
on another note, gf does not want to update after seeing what happened to my phone, its downloaded to her phone, does anyone know how to remove the option to update? thanks

What's happening in device manager when in fastboot?hey,
the google usb is showing as installed on the sdk manager. I have adb and fastboot, tried fastboot devices and it is not showing anything.
Really think the phone is goosed!
Fastboot driver is totally separate from usb one. There are loafs of threads with the universal fastboot driver on (oddly the one I used was a Samsung driver).
Install that and then the fastboot OEM devices command should show your device

All I did when I got the nexus 7 was put root on it. That wouldn't have any affect would it??
