***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

having tried most brands over the last year these are the best in my humble opinion, the polsilver super iridiums are an amazing blade often overlooked. they are sharp as feathers but more gentle. the rest are solid budget blades.

Anyone use Personna Platinum blades?

Ordered some from Hong Kong and looking at them they don't have any branding on the blade at all. Does this mean I've copped some fakes?

Anyone got some from a reputable company who could take a look before I stick a dispute up on da bay.

personnas from asda are plain. totally blank blades. however even the genuine ones are poor in my opinion, even on the first shave they are poor. DE blades are cheap so i would never risk buying fake ones from hong kong to be honest. :p

Thanks guys. I've filed a claim and I'll see what the seller says. Will have a look for a small pack of those polsilvers to try.

I thought the personna's were meant to be a good blade?

Anyone used a Muhle R41 grande? Thinking I might get one as my 2nd razor to try both opencomb and a heavier razor .....

Edit: took the plunge and ordered one

Haven't tried it yet. Straight away in hand the extra weight is very nice though. Opted for the Muhle so I can chop and change the heads.

Got this and some persona's/polsilvers lined up ready to try.

Not sure what the deal is here but I've had my Merkur Futur razor for about 5 years and it's been great. I thought, as it's Christmas, I would by another razor. I plumbed for the Merkur non adjustable, like the 34c, with the open comb, What utter gash. It just did nothing but push soap around my face. I tried all angles and eventually started to get some cutting going but compared to the Futur, my word, what a waste.

If you have bought one of these, or a razor like it and are wondering what all the fuss is about, my advice would be, get a better, different, adjustable razor.

I bought two, as I was going to give my friend one for Christmas as his introduction to DE shaving, but don't think I will bother now....

Pushed soap around? Serious question: did you put it together correctly? I've known two people that have placed the bottom plate upside down with similar results.

It's a 25C, my bad, and to be honest, it's more than likely the bottom plate was indeed upside down (curved upwards), but I'm sure it wasn't. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and try again with it on Saturday (checking the bottom plate) and report back :)

Personna make many different blades, often the supermarket packaged blades are made by Personna and they don't have any markings on them. Those generic ones are pretty poor generally but I still find the Personna Med Prep blades (http://connaughtshaving.com/perssu.html) to be the best I've tried. They're sharp and very smooth.

I very much doubt if there are any Personna fake blades in existence, I just think you bought the ones which are at the lower end of their price range and are rubbish!

A fairly decent offer from Crieghtons:

GET 25% OFF WHEN YOU SPEND £25 OR MORE

Enter discount code XMAS25 at the checkout to get your Christmas discount!

This offer runs into the New Year until 2nd January 2014, 11.59p.m.

For me, the offer is made decent by the extant discount on the Truefitt & Hill range - 25% off that too.

I've got a Progress short handled, it's an excellent adjustable. I prefer it to the Slim or Fatboy.

I normally use it on 3, but have used it on 6 (5+1) when i didnt notice i'd changed the setting, still had a great shave, similar to a Fatip that time though.

I've not used a Futur, that look like a bit of a chunky razor to me.

Just had another shave with the Edwin Jagger DB89L & Feather blade, still stand by my initial comments of it is virtually the same as the Muhle R89, absolutely nothing to choose from between the 2.

I normally shave with those cheap £1 BIC razors from Poundland, just those and hot water as I have never seen the use of shaving cream (odd I know). What difference is there with and without?

Beard since 16, now 23, been shaving every week since the same way. Shaver recommendations for around £30 would be good, cheers!

I would suggest the Edwin Jagger DB89L as it's only £21.99 (As opposed to £29.99 for the Merkur 34C and £25.99 for the Muhle R89) at shaving shack with 5 Derby Blades, you also get a free gift for orders over £9.99 so would suggest some different blades (I have Gillette 7 O'clock yellows which are great).

Also don't got near your face without some kind of foam, I would suggest trying the Palmolive shave stick from Wilkos for around 50p and also the cheap brush (I think it's a Wilkinson Sword one at around 5 or 6 quid) with it.
