***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

My tip for shaving sticks like the Arko and Palmolive ones is to unwrap them and press them into the bottom of a suitable container. This allows you to lather up straight off them with your brush and a little hot water.

Nice tip, I'll give that a go tomorrow, thanks! I suppose the good thing about applying it straight onto your face with a stick, is that it presses the soap into your beard as it's quite stiff?

Just started using the Proraso sandalwood cream, and my oh my, what a lovely cream to use, ive used sticks, taylor and bonds sandalwood and up until recently the proraso Menthol cream. My skin responds to this so much better and its a better finish.

My kit is a simple Merkur slant and gillette 7'oclock blades.

I love the eucalyptus and menthol variant, so I must try the sandalwood. I have some Taylor of Old Bond Street waiting for me to try upstairs, too.

Indeed. I've found that if you have some decent stubble it catches the stick quite nicely. The trouble was, shaving became so nice to me that I began to do it every day and didn't have any stubble! :)

At 50p you can just go crazy and have a Palmolive Shave Stick in a container and another still in stick form. To me, DE is all about experimenting and finding what you like and what works for you.

The sandalwood has a very strong fragrance so be aware of that if you're going to wear an eau de toilet which isn't sandalwood; it will at best overpower and at worst mix horribly with anything you apply post shave.

I'm on my proraso stage again (my cycle goes ToBS > Proraso > Truefit and Hill) and I wasn't able to get any more Feathers so I'm trying out the Astra Superior blades. They're good: almost as sharp as Feathers but more forgiving and I get an additional day's shave. I think there's a shortage of Feathers as I can't get them anywhere in NZ and amazon.com was showing very late deliveries from overseas, too. Anyone else having problems?

I'd also forgotten how much I'm impressed by the proraso pre/post shave cream. It's just brilliant stuff. Highly recommended.

So my Edwin Jagger DE89 broke when the head screw sheered off when replacing a blade....

So I'm the market for a replacement and I've been looking at the Merkur 34C as I believe it's similar the DE89 in terms of aggressiveness. However, I've read some negative reviews on the rain forrest regarding the chrome plating chipping? Anyone had a 34C for a while and can comment? I obviously don't want another one of these breaking on me.

I've had my 34c for over two years now. I shave every working day with it. No chipping and no problems whatsoever. What are these people doing to their razors?

I guess they're accidentally knocking the razor on the bottom of the sink basin when swilling?

The Merkur Futur is a better razor if you can up your budget a bit. Should get one for around 50 or 60 GBP.

I do like the look of the Futur, I'm worried it will take a while to get used to though as reviews seem to state it's a different beast vs the likes of the 34C etc.

Ok Been shaving a while now with the 34C dont tend to cut myself to much with it.
I shave about once a week, as I dont get much growth. Should I be shaving more?

I find that under my chin and neck takes a few goes to get it all and sometimes I have a few stray hairs that I miss.
I am thinking of getting another razor been having a look at the slanted ones.
But what do you guys reccomend im open to any sugestions

A few new shaving bits from the last few weeks, i was doing well as i hadn't bought any shaving crap for 6 months other than my custom brush last month.

Gillette Aristocrat #66

This is the mildest Aristocrat i have (I've got a #15, #16, #21, #66, US).

I normally use a much more aggressive razor (#15, Fatip, NEW Deluxe) and shave every other day. This one is a razor for an everyday shaver only, as it struggled with 2 days of growth.

I made a detour via St James's on the way home from work yesterday and picked these up.

- D R Harris Windsor EDT - I love the smell of the soap and this is exactly the same to my nose. It's a 100ml splash bottle, i fitted a spray lid from boots to it. (The 50ml spray they sell is about £5 less than a 100ml splash...)

- D R Harris Almond Soap refill - I thought i'd get a spare puck as this is one of my favourite soaps.

- TOBS Eton College Cologne - One of only two things i like from TOBS, the other is Jermyn St Cologne.

Spaceman which adjustable would you suggest?

New: i'd buy a Merkur Progress (short handle version).

Vintage: i like both the Gillette Slim or Fatboy.

The Progress is the only new adjustable i've used though, but it is a very nice shaver. Very mild up to around a Fatip when i had it set on 5+1 by accident once, i didnt notice until after the shave.
