***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

I've had my Proraso menthol bowl for 3-4 months now and have hardly made a dent in it. My Kent silvertip has so much loft you need barely any cream at all.

Not complaining, but I've not even opened my other two bowls yet - no new cream needed for 3 years :)

If you are reading this and haven't tried Proraso before then give it a whirl. Incredible value for money and genuinely super products.

I always find I could have used less cream than I do, even though I've been consciously trying to reduce the amount I use for ages now. This is using ToOBS sandalwood and an old unnamed synthetic brush - which I actually prefer to my best badger brush, stiffness is really important I find.

If you find it too soft. try pinching the base of the bristles with your thumb and fingers.

Treated myself to a Merkur Futur from Harrods today, along with 10% off paid £55 for it, not used it yet but looking forward to it, not sure what number to start on but I'm sure I'll work it out

I'm looking to start de shaving. Can anyone comment on this set I am looking to buy please?
Men Rock Double Edge Razor Shaving Gift Set with Shaving Bowl and Drip Stand...
I have been experimenting with a soap stick and a cheapo brush I got from wilkos and I am loving my shave but that is still using my Gillette fusion razor.

You can happily use the 50p Palmolive soap stick until you're sure you want to stick with DE.

And then it's all down the rabbit hole...

I used one as my first DE. It's an aggressive razor, even on it's lowest setting.

Since you already have some cheap soap and brush, you might as well get a Wilkinson Classic for £6
I recommend a Merkur 15C for ~£20. It's an open comb but it is as mild as the Wilkinson Classic.

Thanks for the replies but it's too late. My misses has ordered it for me as a Christmas present.
I will be sticking with DE shaving as I can't stand paying for cartridge blades any longer.

Down the rabbit hole I go I guess :D

Just had my first shave with a new Merhle R89 feels much improved over my older Merkur 34C, same blades and products and routine just a better shave.

Can anyone suggest a quality brush for around £40-50 I could use a upgrade.

Aren't the heads on those two razors exactly the same as each other? And that's the same as the Edwin Jagger DE89, a lot of manufacturers just use the same standard head and make their own handles. I use the same head with an Atlas handle from Above The Tie.
Expensive garbage.

They're different heads not much but enough to make a difference, the Muhle has a slightly thinner head and seems to bend the blade just a little further. I tempted by the Merkur Futur as well. It could be a case of the emperors new clothes but seemed to get less aggravation and closer shave with it. They also have different lockup the Muhle is a 3 piece to the Merkur 2 piece design.

Having thought about trying DE shaving for a while, I finally got round to it tonight.
I ditched using cans of gel/foam about a year ago and have been using a brush and soap, and I have to say I found that a lot better.
I ended up buying a Bluebeards DE razor and picked up a sampler pack of blades and gave it a try tonight. For being my first effort I was pretty pleased, not as difficult as I thought it might be, didn't take any huge chunks out of my face, pretty good shave considering.
Looking forward to improving my technique and trying some of the other blades over the coming weeks.
