***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Does anyone have a christmas shaving wishlist? :D

I've ordered a Rockwell 6S and was hoping to have it for Xmas, but that doesn't look likely now :(

Considering cancelling it and getting a #102 now that iKon have them back in stock. Going to wait and see if any of the UK stockists get hold of some.

Can anyone spec me a Razor Shaving Starter Kit?

Ive looked on quite a few websites at kits but the DE Safety Razor Shaving Starter Kit were all out of stock and contacting them,Not available till after xmas! :(

So looks like il have to buy individually, was hoping for a nice all in one kit in a box..its for the old man for xmas as he uses crappy disposable one from the shop.

appreciate any help..ideally looking to spend between £30-45.

I'm not like most in this thread. I've only ever used the one that is the default in the kit. Blades a lot will say feathers but I like the Gillete sharp edge ones better.

Looking good,Whats the best razer in that kit for the £22-24 range and what blades would you recommend?

I know nothing about this sort of stuff,i always use the crappy disposable razors too so might invest me in one of those kits too.

thanks.

I have the Muhle R89, Merkur 38C Barber Pole and the Merkur Futur Chrome, all 3 are great razors but if I had to use just 1 it would be the Muhle, it is not aggressive at all and is very easy to handle to get a good shave.

Muhle R89 is a good choice there, in fact all of those defaults are spot on.

For blades, generally 3 types are most recommended.

Beginner - Derby Extra
Intermediate (bit sharper) - Astra Platinum
Pro (alum block at the ready) - Feathers

Recommend the merkur 39c, somewhat aggressive of a beast when paired with my go to blades, the Feather Hi stainless blades, but it cuts through my coarse beard so easily. Though I do revert to the merkur 34c for the neck

Alas, now finally got blades for my Feather Artist Club DX in the form of Feather Professional super. This is gonna hurt :D

Just wondering if any one can help me, Been using a Merkur 39c with Astra platinum blades for about 6 months now but i find i have to do at least 3 passes to get a very clean shave. I don't always have time to do this in a morning so ive ended up doing one pass then cleaning up with a regular cartridge razor. Would changing blades help with this? the only other blades ive tried are derby extra and those get the same results.

Use the same driver as my go to. As per my comment above yours, I pair it with the Feather Hi Stainless blades. Have not tried it with the Astra platinum blades, but did with the Derby extra, and the Feathers are definitely a step up in my opinion compared to them. Goes without saying the 39c is pretty heavy so paired with these blades no pressure required really.

Only issue I found was the feathers dull a tad more quickly.

In my (limited) experience, it's hard to beat Feather blades. When I bought my AS-D2, I also ordered Astra blades (which I understand to be on a par with Derby). They don't shave any where near as closely as Feather blades.

There's no doubt that Feather blades are the sharpest but that doesn't necessarily mean that they're the most suited to everyone. I also prefer Personna Med Prep blades to Feathers.

I've found it common that many newcomers to DE shaving think that they should aim for the Feather blade simply because it's the sharpest. That's guff, you use the blade which works the best in your razor, on your face. Everyone is different. There are many different types, grab a sample pack and work your way through them.

As it happens, over the last few weeks I've been going back over some blades that I discounted early on and really, they're perfectly fine and now that I've got a few years experience, I can get a superb shave with any blade I care to use.

So please, those who are new. Don't just try a Feather and immediately say that everything else is rubbish. Keep experimenting, keep trying different stuff and keep learning. It's all part of the enjoyment of DE shaving.

Am I missing something? 3 passes is what I believed was the normal shave? I've always done 3 passes since all the videos and tutorials have the standard starter, with, across and against the grain. I often don't go against the grain but 3 passes is normal no?

'Normal' is different for each person.
I use two/three passes.
WTG and XTG for my sideburns, cheeks and neck.
WTG, XTG and GTX for my upper lip and chin.

As for blades, I find that Wilkinson work best for me.
