***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

All sounds about right. On the lather, put more cream in the bowl and less water, then add a little bit more water until you get the consistency you need (you actually just need to add drops from your fingertips).

I whip it up until there are no longer any air bubbles. It should resemble whipped cream/shave foam from a can, in that it will stand on end/stay up in a tip like whipped cream would. Some people prefer to do this on their face but I can't seem to lather it up so well doing it that way.

I was going to say the same. It's all well and good having a nice looking lather, but the massaging/lathering process applied directly to your face helps soften the beard hugely.

Thankyou for all the replies, I'm going to order a mug or bowl with handle to mix in. It seems easy than doing it on my face. I spent a while brushing it into my face after I had lathered it in the bowl anyway.
Face seems to have recovered quite well, shave isn't as close as id like on my sidies moustache and chin and I have some irritated looking skin on my lower neck, but overall I'm pleased with my first attempt. Need to work on my razor angle I think

Ignore the aftershave at the very back. But here's my shaving shelf.
I'll try take a photo tomorrow of my lather on my face.

Pretty embarrassed about posting this but if I don't I'll never know.
Just had my second DE shave.
First bit I'm struggling with is lathering up my TOBS Sandalwood cream. Here's my brush after lather ready for my face.
See it looks like it's OK to me, it holds it shape in the tub (it has very small bubbles, is this right?) but doesn't volumise like I'd expect or have that thick luxurious feel.
So I applied it to my face, first thing is the brush is pretty scratchy and irritating my skin before i even get at it with the razor (my neck gets particularly irritated by the brush). Here's the cream on my face for my first and second pass. Looks pretty thin to me.

So the place is struggled getting my razor in was just under my nose. The places i struggled with most getting a close shave are the edges (sides/ends) of my mustache and the side of my chin (same places i struggling with my electric razor, the hairs here a particularly thick.) so they took a bit of going. I only did one pas on most my neck as again the brush had already irritated and i think my first pass just made it even worse, maybe im too heavy on the soft hairs and skin on my neck.
So final two photos are trying to show how close my shave was in my main area (around my mouth) this is where my darkest and thickest hair grows (i get hair all over but its only really dark on my sidies, mustache and around my chin)

Those final two photos make my rash look much worse than it is and my shave look much closer than it is.

So this time as advised i washed my face to remove the cream and left the water on my face to apply the alum block, it gave a slight ting all over but not as severe as i expected. I then washed and dabbed my face dry. I then applied my alcohol free TOBS aftershave balm which stung like a ***, which confused me as why the thing that shouldn't sting stung and the thing that should sting i hardly noticed.

Thanks in advance and sorry for yet another long and rambling post.

First off, you're one ugly *******

The lather should ideally be more meringue like.

The first few shaves will butcher your face until you get the technique right (and everyone differs) so don't worry about that. I'm guessing it took you about 15 mins which is fine.

The end result looks fine to me considering it's your first time. It just takes practice.

Thanks for the feedback.
In terms of the meringue like, do you think I need more water?

Let the weight of the razor do the work.

I don't wash the alum off. Some post shave creams don't work well with alum.

You can rub the alum bar under your arms and other places you might use a deodorant. Alum is the active ingredient in many of them. Always rub it on wet skin.

Rubbing it around your neck front and back can stop you getting "hot under the collar."
