I would get another months practice under your belt before using feathers, especially if your skin is at all sensitive. Derby are very good blades for beginners, and in my experience the next level of cutting power up are Astra platinums, which I use now

Good call. I started out with a Bluebeard's Revenge and got a multipack of different blades. I found Derby blades to be a little too soft and they dragged more where my beard hair grows thickest.

Astra blades are really good though and are a good option before getting Feathers.

Feather blades are super sharp and it's a lot easier to nick yourself with them. If you're prone to the occasional zit under your stubble then Feather blades will surely find them with a nice dark red indicator.

Feathers are great, but sharp - I'd hang on to them for a bit until you're more comfortable. Astra SPs are fantastic blades, Derbys are safe but boring (and you can learn bad habits as they're very forgiving), most Gillette blades are good. I'm a big fan of Personna blades too.
I'd seen the same mentioned before, which was why I didn't initially order them - hopefully my Derby and Astra's should be here today or tomorrow - so will certainly give them a go first.

Get an alum block for post shave (wet it, rub it on your wet face, leave it a minute or so and rinse off) and a good moisturiser for after that.
Got a matching Bluebeard's Revenge one... first time using it was an experience :D

This is what I have for reference:

You need to spend a few minutes stroking your face when you have a couple of days growth, which will be highly entertaining for anyone that happens to walk in at the time (so my wife said anyway). With the grain will feel smoother, against the grain rougher. Across the grain is just sideways to those. Don't expect any logic to it - WTG is down my cheeks, but up my throat and sideways on my neck. You'll get used to it :D
First explanation I've seen that makes sense - will give it a go :)

I'm sure this has been asked loads but where is best to buy blades?

I've had a Mercur 34C for quite a few years now and I have used Derby blades for the past couple of years as I bought a bulk load of 100. I get on fine with them, vey rarely/never cut myself and no rash. I've still got loads left but thought I'd get some others to have a go. Possibly Feather's but they seem to be like £30+ for 100.

+1 for the alum block. Great for beginners as I'm pretty sure you could lop an ear off and a quick rub with the alum would stem the bleeding

I've been DE shaving for approx 5 years and still use one of these, best thing ever to use, I very very rarely get any rash now (the reason to move to DE was I constantly got a really bad rash on my neck).

Honestly the Feathers are worth the price, I'm just about to open my last pack of 5 Gillette 7 O'clock Sharps of the 100 I bought years ago, I've got 100 Personna MediPreps to start but still will continue to use Feathers (With my Merkur Futur razor they are immense) as they are so good.

Just getting started in the world of DE shaving, as got a Bluebeard's revenge DE Shaving kit for Christmas.

As odd as it sounds, really enjoying DE Shaving so far, although 4 or 5 shaves in I'm still not very good at it :)

So far have tried Tesco blades (as the person who bought it for me forgot to buy any others - seemed ok), Shark Stainless (Too aggressive? cut myself quite badly), and Gillette 7'O clock Sharpedge (gave a close shave but lots of tiny cuts next day).

Have got some Derby, Astra SP, and Gillette Silver Blue on order, but didn't know if there were any others worth giving a go?
I'm still using Astra's, bought a box of 500 and see no reason to change. Rarely if ever nick myself. Get an alum block for after the shave, and a styptic pencil if you cut yourself.

Derby blades are rubbish.

I'm still a big fan of Personna Med Prep blades, they really are my go-to blade.

If I've got a few days growth, I'll shave my first pass with a Feather in a Merkur 37C and then the second pass is with a Med Prep in my Edwin Jagger DE89L with an Above The Tie "Atlas" handle.

No doubt its been said - but the most important thing when DE shaving or using a CT razor is face prep. Personally I maintain a beard so only shaving cheeks and neck, but my usual routine is face scrub in the shower, and then a face wash. This leaves everything ready for the shave. Out the shower and then apply some shave gel so I can see exactly where I am shaving. Down the cheeks, and then first pass is down the neck (to get the sharp line along the bottom of the beard) and then up the neck for smoothness. Follow up with some moisturiser.

In terms of product I use the Elemis men collection and Ive never once cut myself or felt the blade tugging. I use a merkur futur and randomly move between blades that I got in a sample pack - feathers and personna are the ones I will buy again once Ive run out. I think Ive been using a DE for about 10 years now.

Buy one of the blade sample packs and work out which ones work for your face. Try the Feather last.

But that stage you'll be ready to use Feathers every day.

Been using the Green 7'Oclock for years now. I did what you did trying batches of different blades. Then bought a 20 pack of the greens, not even half way through them all yet. Still totally satisfying shave with them for me, love them. It was close between the blacks at one point, though settled on the greens.

I've always thought that the whole 'face prep' thing is overrated. All I do is splash some hot water on my face and then lather up. Perhaps my skin is old and leathery but that's all I've ever needed to do. No pre-shave oils, no soaking, nothing. Just a splash and go.

I really envy you. I have thick hair and not exactly rugged skin. I can really feel the difference between if I do what you describe, or if I i really give my beard hairs a good scrub with face wash or sometimes just hot water and giving it a good brushing with a stiff synthetic shaving brush. I also lather on the face for extra softening.

Shave after shower in the morning helps.
This. I don't use pre shave products, just shower, then lather up with (current fave) Proraso green, shave with a Merkur 34C with Astra blades and finish off with an alum block and Nivea post shave balm. I only ever use the blades for one shave then replace.
