***The Official Manly Shaving Thread***

Looks like an attempt to upscale prices for safety razors. They are coming back on trend - because with proper technique they give a better and cheaper shave than cartridges - and naturally someone is now trying to cash in on that. Charging at prices like $399 is just appealing to people who like to spend lots of money for the sake of it.
Exactly. Ridiculous pricing when you can get the same for much less..

I converted from disposables a few years back and have never looked back.

I'm using a Merkur 34C with Feather blades - picked up some multi-sample packs and for me found Feather to by far the best shave out of Derby, Astra, Shark & Dorco. I typically go 2-3 shaves with a blade - the Feathers really are supremely sharp. As I only shave a couple of times a week the 20x5 pack I picked up has lasted me some time.

No dedicated pre-shave products for me, I simply shave after a shower - if I have time on my hands I'll rub some conditioner into the beard particularly if I've let it go few days longer than usual.

Shave cream I've been using Taylors of Old Bond St (just visited the store on Jermyn Street to pick up a new selection of creams - Almond, Sandalwood and the original for when I finish off the Etons - really must try some proraso tho - read a lot of good things about that.

Finish up with an Alum block and that's me done.

My D89 is dead :( Dropped and snapped, it has lasted a loooong time though.

Thinking about the Futur. Anything else to consider? The Drake looks pretty nice for £20!

Parker Variant. Haven't touched my Futur since I got it.

The Merkur slants (37c/39c) are nice daily drivers if you want to try something a bit different.

I had a futur but went back to my hd34c as I really didn’t like the head size, i struggled under my nose with it.
I fancy a mergress next but I’ll probably end up back with the 34.

anyone tried the oneblade razor with a pivoting head $50 takes single edge feather blades

https://shop.onebladeshave.com

the stainless steel version is a bit pricey

I have the Core Version in their proprietary plastic and it is a superb little Razor! Shipping was a bit of a nightmare (not OneBlades fault). DHL failed to deliver and returned to sender. Email to their Customer Service and an employee called Dominic emailed me back after investigating and offered me another razor shipped via alternate courier plus some extra blades at no charge. Was more than pleased with their service.

Once received, it shaves buttery smooth, cant even feel the blade inside on the 1st shave. Only gripe is the blade is spent after 3 - 4 shaves, seems to me you have rotate it each time else the blade seems to burr and feel 'tuggy' if used in the same orientation more than 2 or 3 times.

This sits alongside my trusty DE89 and Fine Superlite Slant - which is a fantastic little razor. Both paired with a PolSilver Super Iridium are superb shaves.

Thinking of getting a Parker Variant to add to the Shave den - heard very good things about them.

Been using cornerstone lately and find them ok.
But 5 weeks ago I was asked by daughter to grow a beard and now I love it.
Stop this shaving malarkey and grow a beard !!!

I don't like beards, it feels very uncomfortable. Sometimes my face hair can grow a little or I can go a week without shaving but then I just really don't like the feeling. I would probably be better off with a beard though as it makes me look more manly :D.

I have this one:

Can't imagine shaving without one

Thanks, I was looking at the Muhle chrome shaving bowl on ShavingShack. How big are the bowls? do you just hold them in the palm of your hand?

I use an empty tobs cream bowl :p

I don't have any spare, my previous soap was Mitchell's Wool Fat but the ceramic bowl with that got broken :(.

Anyone had any experience with a scuttle?

Do any of you use a shaving bowl? I really think my lathering would be better with one. Any recommendations?

I have a muhle porcelain bowl which I find to be the perfect size for lathering - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Muhle-Blac...&qid=1522653770&sr=1-87&keywords=shaving+bowl

Only issue with the porcelain is that they are fragile - my first was an Edwin jagged branded porcelain bowl (which was exactly the same product yet 50% more expensive) which the cat knocked onto the floor.
This was replaced with a chrome one but I found that to be to small for my liking and so replaced with the muhle.

No, waste of lather. I load the brush and then build the lather on my face.
I find that not to be true. I use a bean sized amount in a bowl, add a little water and whisk until up to a sizeable volume of creamy lather. When lathering directly on my face I find myself loading an unknown, often greater amount. I can make a tub last longer if lathering in a dedicated bowl.

I take it you guys who are using a lather bowl are using cream from a tube as I've got TOBS creams in tubs and just dip the edge of the brush in the cream and then lather on the face.

Soaps are a different matter, I just lather in the tub for my Mitchells wool fat and Tabac soaps.

Heh, just noticed this thread. Been DE shaving since forever. Grandad was a Turkish barber. Since i had acne he taught me to shave .

Current set is a muhle badger brush merkur 34 with Derby blades. I'm mainly an Arko man, but some mix with sandalwood ( Taylor of bond) and Proraso.

Tried the whole triple blade stuff, good but really hard on my face.

Enjoy your shaves people.
