The Official Microsoft Flight Thread

I gave it as many chances as I could, but they just got it so wrong. Flight games for the masses need to have guns and explosions. Flight sims need to have depth and immersion to engage enthusiasts. This had neither.

+1 Microsoft just didn't listen to flight sim enthusiasts, so Microsoft if your listening now then you need to support "FSX" A SERVICE PACK 3 would be good and I for one would pay for simulator updates and am not interested in your arcade FLIGHT game. FSX enthusiasts have spent a small fortune on add ons for this sim, did you really think they'd dump all that for something so shallow as your FLIGHT game? come on, give us FSX updates, we demand it dam you.

As a lapsed flight sim enthusiast (military missions rather than civil A->B) I recently picked up the Flight pack in the Steam sale. And I confess that the initial tutorial missions impressed me more than I was expecting. Being given 'missions' to do, no matter how silly, triggered the games player instinct nicely, and gave me an excuse to fly.

I soon met some issues with the flight models though which popped my enthusiasm bubble. However if I hadn't got distracted by Take on Helicopters I'd still be messing about with it.

Overall it was probably a mistake to dump the FSX line, but you have to assume it wasn't covering its costs, and that third party developers (adding aircraft and features) were eating Microsoft's pie in some way. Perhaps MS weren't clever enough when drawing up contracts to ensure Apple style margins for themselves. Or maybe even the third party stuff didn't generate significant income.

Anyway, I still think that the Flight idea for mission based flying stood a chance of success *if* they'd priced the content to appeal to the slightly-interested masses. But they didn't. So this news doesn't surprise me even though -- having finally taken a look -- I'm more impressed than I expected to be.

As usual, I get into something just when it's too late. :-)

While totally expected it's still sad, and I fear this will further discourage MS from developing an FSX successor.

But they got it completely wrong from start to finish. They alienated the existing sim community who should have been the core support as well as the core spenders. They misjudged the DLC prices and features.
