*** The Official Nintendo Switch 2 ***

I realise that Nintendo is taking a "if it isn't broke then don't fix it approach" and no doubt it will still sell like hot cakes and have great games, but I can't deny that the Switch 2 feels like a big disappointment for me.

Thinking back, NES to SNES had a large graphical leap and a much improved controller. SNES to N64 was an incredible leap in graphics and introduced analog controls. GameCube was a bit disappointing but the graphics were quite a bit better than N64. The Wii was not everyone's cup of tea but at least it was something completely different and introduced gaming to many people who had never played video games before. The Wii U was a bit of a flop sales wise but the tablet controller was actually a great idea and was completely different to what came before. The Switch took the idea of the Wii U and perfected it. The detachable controllers and being able to play both on the TV and handheld was exciting.

The Switch 2 seems to have a bit better graphics, slightly bigger screen (although if the rumours are true it will be an LCD which is a downgrade) and mouse functionality with the joycons perhaps? The Switch 2 feels like the least exciting new Nintendo console since the GameCube.

Of course the Switch 2 makes complete business sense and will makes Nintendo billions but I feel like the days of interesting Nintendo gimmicks and innovation have ended with the Switch 2.

They'll probably reveal something completely unexpected now, like the new button being a switch to activate 3DS style 3D screen :p

For me the only thing that doesn’t make sense is the step back to an LCD screen anyone expecting a revolution was always going to be disappointed. Nintendo have been the only company really pushing genuine innovation in recent years and have hit on a near perfect setup. The LCD thing is eaither to keep costs down or lineup and easy Switch2 OLED upgrade in a year or so’s time. I certainly wouldn’t be buying a release day console and hanging back for the seemingly inevitable upgrade.

I know a huge innovation was never on the cards for the next Nintendo console but it was kind of a bummer to have it confirmed.

I was at the very least hoping for an improvement to ergonomics as the Switch is so uncomfortable to use for me but doesn't look to be the case. The triggers don't even look like they are analog as there doesn't look like there is much travel to them. Could be wrong about that though.

I think the biggest thing though is I own a Steam Deck OLED. It is so comfortable to use, has a great screen and is so customisable and open. It makes the locked down Switch 2 look kind of unappealing. The only thing really going for the Switch 2 is that is the only place to play Nintendo games.

This is all that matters really, they have a closed market and they know it.
And the vast majority of people don’t want customisable they just want pickup and play, which the switch delivers in spades. Combine that with the lower price point and the Switch is the second best selling console of all time for a reason so Nintendo were never going to risk breaking it.

You are absolutely right but it is still disappointing. Tech is really boring these days. Iterate, monetize and play it safe. Yawn

Looks way too much of tbe same, I'd like to see the specs for this, but personally I feel the backwards compatibility is going stifle development for a while. We will see lots of cross platform with improvements for Switch 2 and not much in terms of exclusive games. I'm not sure if I will pick one of these up at launch.

If it is an lcd screen picking up at launch for an inflated price when an OLED upgrade is inevitable seems like burning money!

Knowing Nintendo that OLED won't come until the hardware is on its knees.

There may be the option to replace the screen sooner. There has been some good work around the existing switch on that front. I suspect they will work on the Switch 2.

They could launch two SKU's. OLED and LCD model, all manufactures love splitting the user base now.
You could be right! I’m still hoping the LCD rumour isn’t true as for me it is an unnecessary step back the OLED switch screen is night and day to the original. The only justification I can see for an LCD is if they want to sell a more affordable model as pricing has been a key ingredient in switch 1 sales.

Annoying it's not released before Christmas, how am I supposed to pass it off as the children's present if it's mid year.

I have a daughter that loves to dance and is starting to show an interest in games she loved Animal Crossing.
Son only has use of one arm so Nintendo style have have always appealed should be a few he can play by just waving a single controller around.
Plus I want one.

Unless you mean scalped prices, I wouldn't anticipate much in the way of price drops from whatever they start at.

The original Switch launched at £279 and Nintendo currently sell it for £269 (obviously others sell for a bit less). They'll only be price dropping if they launch at something stupid like £450 and it bombs Wii U style.

Not going of the Switch 1 history. They hold value really well.
Normally some reasonable bundle offers around Black Friday with extra games/online passes and a few quid off at other retailers but your right discounts on the switch are pretty few and far between. I’m hoping Nintendo manage to maintain a similar price point as for me that was a key attraction when buying one for my kids.
