Over the life of a node, well, who knows what will happen? But performance out the gate on the 28nm process wasn't as big as people expected. It took time for both camps to get up to speed.

Mainly because the 680 was the first time nvidia used a smaller die size to replace a top end GPU and the actual 580 sized Titan/780 cards didnt come out until much later

This time we are expecting them to pull another "680" so yeah its not going to be double the performance of a 980ti, but looking back at the 580>680, it should still be decent (the 580 itself was not the first 40nm generation of cards - that started in with the 200's)

if i can get a card that out performs a 980ti by 10-20%, runs cooler and uses less or the same power and is around the £400 mark id be happy.

im on a gtx670 atm so anything is a step up

Given a 980Ti still retails for 550 I think it would be highly unlikely to expect something 15% faster for so much cheaper.

Their will be 2 price points, £350 and £500. I'm expecting the 1070 to be equal to the Ti and the 1080 to be 15-20% faster

Yes it might be wishful thinking that NVidia would repeat the pricing they did with the 970, but think about how the 970 has been NVidia's most successful card ever, by a massive margin, even with the whole ramgate issue. I would think they would love to repeat that, but price it too high and it might not happen, for many that £300 is the magical cut off point.

Exactly, Nvidia know that AMD will also be releasing something as fast as a FuryX for much less money so they will want to get a product out first to get all the early adopters... 980ti's wont now be selling in the same volume as they were 6 months ago and the smaller x80/x70 will be much cheaper to produce so they get volune and margin

In the US the "back to school season" is a thing, and then they have a few months selling at full price before they have to start doing black friday/holiday season sales

I really hope you both are right. I really do, it would be great.

But, I don't know how. You have to remember that the 970 was made on a mature node, with costs been low. The costs of changing to 28nm had been absorbed by the Kepler cards. The price difference between the 980 and 970 could be explained by the fact that the 970 had significantly less cuda cores, less ROPS, less L2 cache and 512MB slow ram.
