No such thing as overkill lol
I was using a 980ti for a couple of weeks on 1080p and constant 60fps with zero drops was great...
Then get an x34 and oops

I will sit tight and wait for Ti....
. I bet 1080ti will release when AMD relweases something more powerful than a 1080.
Got to love the percentage that the 1080 is supposedly faster than the 980ti reaching new heights with 40% being possible now..
Like when ?
I'm not waiting...no point....everyone is talking about a card that doesn't even exist...ill get a ti when it's out...
I've got 400 from the sale of my 980ti looking at putting 150 towards a 1080 not FE edition...
I'll then sell the 1080 when or if the 1080ti hits...but then wait...the 1180 might be coming out ....I could wait for that...but what if I waited for the 1180 ti instead....then hang on a sec...if I wait for the 1180 ti then the 1190 might be coming out...then I guess I would better be waiting for the 1190ti but hang on a sec what if the 1200 is released shortly after...one sec I would then be better waiting for the 1200 ti wouldn't I ?
I'm so confused .....
Help

Are we all mate... aren't we all...
*fingers crossed 1080ti can hold 1440p90+ on most games*
The 970 is in the sweet spot for being excellent at maxing games out at 1080p and getting 60fps. But it's nowhere near overkill, nor is it able to do so for every game. Sometimes a terribly optimised game like Homefront: The Revolution comes along and reminds us that we still depend on the developers to make well optimised games.
It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the 1080 in the long run. After all, it is the first 16nm GPU from Nvidia. I wouln'dt be surprised if they were purposely holding back more powerful chips to release later on down the line, just so they can milk folks with the current ~20-30% improvements first. I bet 1080ti will release when AMD relweases something more powerful than a 1080.

The reality is that most people wait until the upgrade is a decent jump - AND - said significant jump is within their budget.
1080 is 20% faster? Most wait.
1080ti is 40% faster? Most buy, some wait.
1180 is 60% faster? Those that didn't upgrade last time do so now.
It's not rocket science.
The one time people should absolutely wait is if there's a new GPU coming in the next month or so, which will significantly increase the perf you get from whatever budget you have in mind.
Because if it's a case of waiting a few weeks to get 30% more for your money than the current EOL cards, most sane people will find a way to restrain themselves
So to sum up for you easy:
Wait if:
a) The new gen of cards isn't what you consider a significant jump
b) You're mere weeks away from a much better deal
-and-
c) You are not part of the "money is no object" fraternity.
It's not rocket science!
Why does everyone assume they will get a golden chip.
Murphy's Law exists for a reason.
Its already 20-30% faster at 2050mhz vs 1440 (Ti). 2.2-2.3ghz+ will see another 10%.
Going by this thread the gains can be from as little as 5%, yet everyone's jumping on the higher percentage bandwagon like its guaranteed.

All of a sudden everyone who couldn't get 1500mhz stable when they first got their 980ti s can suddenly all get 1500mhz meaning an upgrade is not needed![]()
It sure seems that way
Funny that

What, just like a 1500mhz overclock suddenly seems to be guaranteed on all 980Ti's and Titan X's....![]()
