Because a 'Free Trade Agreement' isn't the same thing as access to the single market. It's the single market that guarantees the 'four freedoms' of goods, capital, services, and people. Given 'people' is one of the fundamental parts, it's not one we're likely to get a pass on, so we either take it or we are left with some other trade agreement.
Tariffs aren't really very interesting, they're pretty straight forward; you charge them or you don't. It's the 'non-tarrif' barriers that are important, and most of these aren't even intentional. Each country might have different rules and regulations on packaging, safety, or some other standards. The single market removes all these as every member is playing by the same rules. Without, you might find you can't sell your product in another country without changing your production line to meet their rules.
This article from the FT cites two analyses from HM Treasury and the OECD that claim that trade in goods between EU member states increased 73% and 60% respectively compared to trade under the WTO rules.
The financial service sector, in particular, relies on the passporting rights of the single market to allow them to sell products and services to EU clients. If they can't do that, then you'll start to see them move elsewhere - this is already starting. As much as the bankers aren't terribly popular, the sector is a rather large contributor to GDP.
It we want to keep our access, we end up with the Norway deal - we have to pay into the budget, accept all the same rules, but we get no say in it. Not particularly attractive.

It works both way though - there were people who wanted exit but turned yellow at the voting booth. The thing that matters most is the final referendum result.

No, in regards to leave and if they back down from the result of the referendum. A lot of people are already sick of politicians and the political system as it is without them backing out of this. The remainders don't have the right to decide to riot when a clear and fair ballot was cast. But if they decided to ignore the outcome of the referendum then that is a different situation.

I'd say it's a dead cert. Bookies favourite already. It will definitely be a Brexit campaigner, and he's the only one with any charisma (if that's what you want to call it)
