** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

I've been on the hunt for a mech kb, after a lot of deliberation I have have basically narrowed it down I think to Cherry MX Black or possibly Red switches. Blues are definitely too noisy for me.

Also want PS2 interface which narrows it down a bit although I'm not sure if you can just use generic adapters (if I hunt hard enough in old boxes I might be able to find some USB>PS2 that came with old mice)? Steelseries G6V2 looks ideal but seems really hard to find at reputable retailers? OcUK have it, but not in stock. Likewise Corsair K60 looks decent but again not in stock.

I do, since a friend has the DAS, they are absolute ******* for finger prints. They pick up finger prints, dirt and grease and thus dust so easily it's a bit of a pain. The Filco does not have that issue. That little annoyance aside though the DAS is a nice keyboard and is really comparable to the Filco is every other way.

ewwwww glossy keyboards are a no no! :p

Their's also an american company who sells pretty much the exact same keyboards as the filcos under their own brand name called leopold.

Also I've always wanted to try a topre keyboard, just can't justify the price :(

Cheers Moeks, sounds like the DAS is a viable option then.

ALso been looking at the WSAD keyboards and their custom options. According to the blog they are looking to have a 105-Key ISO layout before xmas. Could be another option.

Seems like mechanical keyboards are the cool new thing at the moment and lots of manufacturers are bringing new products to the table.

Yea there does seem to be a lot of interest now for some reason. I'm not really sure why exactly, just 2 years ago most people on most computer enthusiast forums would shun them and say how old fashioned and or expensive or noisy they are ...now, everyone wants them, the [H]ard_OCP forums are a prime example of this, within the last year the popularity of mechanical keyboards over there has just exploded. Prior to this people with a real itnerest in mechanical keyboards were basically found on geekhack and that was about it. Still it does mean that there will bea good choice of modern designs to choose fro.

Cheers for that, a great help. I must admit I kinda like using the numpad which I do use quite a lot with my job. What switches would you personally recommend to a FPS gamer that also does a fair bit of typing?

Brown.

Very very happy with browns in mine and I game and type a lot.

Starting to have second thoughts about the 6gv2 as I've just discovered it has no Windows key :/ I know it is a gaming keyboard but I never hit the Windows key accidentally and do use it in Windows, I don't want to have to switch keyboards just for gaming.

Here's what I'm looking for:

-Not loud (so no Blue switches)
-PS/2
-In stock at reputable retailer
-Preferably priced around £100 or less
-UK layout

Currently thinking about the Zowie Celeritas, how loud are the switches?

I'm still going to recommend a filco even though it goes slightly over your budget at around £115.

Seems like we have the same requirements. Ive narrowed it down to either a DAS now, or wait and get either a UK WASD or a UK Filco Ninja when they are released.

I use a SteelSeries 7G. It took a few days of getting used to after a Microsoft Comfort Curve that served me well for about 3 years, but I love it. Could never go back to a dome keyboard now.

I find it fine for typing, however I mostly e-mail, IM, forum post etc., but I've never felt any discomfort after long IM sessions, or typing larger bodies of text. The keys feel a lot nicer than my brother's Logitech G110. They don't require any more or less force, but the lack of a bump where the rubber dome depresses on the G110 certainly makes it a smoother typing experience.

I used a Razer Black Widow at i43, both on a Portal 2 display, and Battlefield 3. It was perfectly OK, to be honest, although it did feel a little strange after my 7G. The bump really doesn't help gaming at all for those moments when you need edge around a corner slowly etc. The click was quite nice for typing, but I suppose that's personal preference. I still like my black switches though. They're a nice compromise, and the 7G hand rest is just divine.

Im not really liking the Razer Black Widow anymore. Not sure if I like the cherry blues for my typing. I feel the reaction speed is a little slow. Unless that's my fault for being to heavy on the key presses.

Also I don't like the key font. I'd love them to do another set of keys I could replace them with.

Well in theory you can replace the key caps with any designed for cherry switches, however the Razer Blackwidow does not look like it has standard sized and profile keycaps ...also they would need to allow the back-lighting to show through, so it may be a no-go. Worth exploring the idea further though I'd say.
