** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

I've read this entire thread with great curiosity and cannot believe that I am seriously considering dropping £100. The Zowie Celeritas Pro thats in the daily deals at the moment http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-004-ZW

What I'd be interested to hear is whether anyone has actually regretted their purchase or wished they'd had spent the money elsewhere?

You might regret it if you buy that keyboard, if I were you I'd look elsewhere for mechanical keyboards, get a filco!

Thanks for the reply NinetyOne. Any particular reason why you would say not to buy the zowie? I think Im sold on Cherry brown switches which the Zowie uses. Are you allowed to recommend where to pick up a Filco in the UK on these forums?

It's just not worth it imo when you can get the best for only a tiny bit more cash, they do all different types of colour switches including brown, just type filco in on google and it should be the 3rd website down, these guys are top quality.

Get a tenkeyless model if you can as their cheaper and don't have the useless numpad on them.

Look nice keyboards apart from they don't tell you in the blurb that the all the top row keys (Esc to Pause break) on the K60 are not cherry MX red's but rubberdome & it's the same on the K90 including the G-keys.

I saw this mentioned on another site, while undoubtably disappointing it's not a deal breaker as long as the WASD, space, CTRL, ALT keys etc are MXs. I don't use the Macro keys and I wouldn't have thought the ESC key will bring any advantage being Mechanical. Still a shame though.

I ordered another mechanical keyboard Monday from Hong Kong, a Noppoo Choc Chip Mini with Cherry MX Red switches (I've always gone for clicky and tactile in the past, so this is new ground for me), I asked for express international delivery so I am hoping that I get it either today or tomorrow. Looking forward to it.

I am starting to amass a bit of a collection now, this will be my 3rd Mechanical keyboard, and frankly I'd like more. I want a KBC Mini Poker for a 4th and I'd very much like an IBM Model M Space Saving Keyboard, however they are rare as rocking horse poo and when they do come up, usually they prices are silly.

I certainly have a preference for tenkeyless and smaller form-factors, I find them to be more ergonomically pleasing to me. Since I can keep my arms and shoulders all in line when I am using the mouse and keyboard simultaneously.

If you play mmo's and need all the extra macro keys then these aren't really for you.

I've played MMOs for years, mostly WoW ...I only stopped in July this year actually. And I have never found any need for macro keys. Until I bought the Filco most of my gaming previously was done with a Model M ...I also have not used a mouse with loads of extra buttons. It just isn't necessary. I expect if you have them and you get used to using them then I could certainly understand why you wouldn't want to be without them, but they are hardly required to be successful and I wouldn't encourage those who are used to life without them to start using them.

Cheers for that, a great help. I must admit I kinda like using the numpad which I do use quite a lot with my job. What switches would you personally recommend to a FPS gamer that also does a fair bit of typing?

MX Blacks are suited to gaming, MX Blues to typing, and Clears/Browns are somewhere in the middle.

However, there is no hard or fast rule. Better to order something you like the look of, and return it under DSR if you can't get along with it.

Well my Choc Chip mini with MX Reds has indeed arrived today, I am typing on it right now and I must say that's it feels lovely. It's a little odd for me not having the tactile bump and click but it's very, very smooth and beautifully light. My fingers just glide over the keys. Build quality seems largely comparable to Filco, however I do prefer the texturing of the key caps, they aren't as smooth as Filco's and have a nicer slightly textured feel.

Looking at the Filco, one thing that puts me off it is that the key caps are pad printed. Surely, like my cheap and nasty logitech, these will wear over time. When Im paying this kinda money for a keyboard I would have thought they would be laser etched or something

Wrong, blacks are just marketed towards gamers, it doesn't mean they're good for all types of games. It's all about preference and the type of game you play.

If the get the filco ninja version they're printed on the side of the key.

Have a choc mini myself, brown keys though, very good keyboard for the price and I mainly use it on the go because I hate laptop keys, but it doesn't feel as solid as my filco.

Well I would agree in that it's not a heavy as the Filco, but I think it's mostly just because it's smaller. I dunno though, I've had a few hours to play with it now and it certainly weighs rather a lot less, the base doesn't seem as solid. None the less though, it feels solid enough and I do prefer the keycap texture.

I must say I am already a Cherry MX red convert, I love how light and smooth they are. Then again this effect is probably magnified to me as my Filco is a Zero, so has the white ultra clicky Alps switches, which have quite a high resistance. My particular Filco is more clicky than my IBM Model M. I do like the click although it is a bit too loud when I am trying to type and talk on Skype or listen to something at the same time ...which is the main reason I decided to give the red switches a try. Also I do find the White Alps have a little bit too much resistance for my liking, I wanted something that requires a lighter touch.

Very pleased so far :)

I forgot I had a Raptor K1 Cherry Keyboard. I have dug it out to play some BF3 on. Keys will take a bit of time to get used to but my god this thing is built like a tank.

I got a Razer Tarantula to play MMO's on. But my WOW days are over and I am back in Fpstown.

you could get a usb numpad breakout keypad thing too

personaly id prefer to have all mechanical keys for a consistancey of feel (or all whatever type)

notsure what my old ms natural pro keyboard is made of, the lettering is still good as new, after 10 years of abuse :O

I use a US layout myself, have done for years, I actually prefer it as I like the long left shift, the only thing I miss really is a pound sign.
