** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

Out of interest how many of you keyboard enthusiasts are really good typists? All this talk of fancy keyboards is inspiring me to try and become a true 10 finger typist. At the moment i probably use only four fingers and am wondering if i can re-train myself after all these years and whether its worth the effort? Any recommendations on how to learn? I've seen people mention the free courses at http://www.typingweb.com

I thought everyone typed with 10 fingers?

The only finger I don't use (or thumb even) is my right thumb.

Starting to have second thoughts about the 6gv2 as I've just discovered it has no Windows key :/ I know it is a gaming keyboard but I never hit the Windows key accidentally and do use it in Windows, I don't want to have to switch keyboards just for gaming.

Here's what I'm looking for:

-Not loud (so no Blue switches)
-PS/2
-In stock at reputable retailer
-Preferably priced around £100 or less
-UK layout

Currently thinking about the Zowie Celeritas, how loud are the switches?

Majestouch 2 still seems the best call. Covers all your requirements but comes in a little over £100. The UK stockist for it is also very very good. Mine arrived next day on standard delivery.

Really do not see the point of the RTR 1x, 2x, 4x etc on the Zowie. Surely you would leave it at 8x always and never change it? Seems like a 'value add' gimmick.

A minority, that's who.

I use 4 fingers + Thumb (And some other weird combos in games) but have no need to be a full touch typist. My Words per minute and accuracy is just fine with what I do.

If you did leave it at 8x, you would have an advantage over other mechanical keyboards as none others have it. So it is a good benefit, but can be a issue when typing as if you help the backspace key for too long, it would delete whatever you have typed very quickly. So for writing documents, 1x is what you want. The Celeritas is big in the Asian SC2 scene apparently, most because they can hammer the keys as fast as humanly possible with no slow down.

Only because they're sponsored by zowie, at least startale are. Pro gamers only use products from companies they're sponsored by for marketing etc, if they had a choice they would probably use something else.

I would guess that the vast majority of people are " hunt and peckers" and use just a few fingers to do all the typing. That's certainly the case where I work anyway. I was never tought to type at school (do they do this now?) so Ive developed my own technique that's probably terrible.

I use all 8 fingers and both thumbs (I also touch type), although I must admit the only reason I use my right thumb is for the FN key on my keyboard which switches the function of some of the keys, the Noppoo Choc Chip Mini has an FN key in place of the right Windows key, as it's a very compact design it does have some switched functions, like media controls and Home, End and Print.

I have the 6gV2 and it does have a Windows key, mine has a PS/2 adapter and I've pressed all the keys and they all registered so it does have Nkey rollover.

It does click when typing, not very loud though. I've not had housemates complaining unless they're in my room.

Mine also has a UK layout, it's the same as my Old MS 600 keyboard and Saitek Eclipse 1.

I also paid under 100 for it.

It's your choice though.

I am really liking the look of the Flico with Cherry Brown's. I am fighting the urge to buy it at the moment with the red WASD and ESC key's. My original Saitek Eclipse has lasted me well but..... :D

I bought "Mavis Beacon teaches Typing", it's got me typing properly although i'm fairly slow, that's more down to lack of practice than anything else though.

Thanks Ill check that out for sure. Im finding that forcing my fingers into the proper positions and always typing the proper way is slowly getting me used to it. Its just very slow at first and I find myself making more mistakes.

Not convinced.

Can you manually press a key fast enough to outpace holding it down and Auto-Repeat spamming it?

I have the Filco Majestouch 2 tenkeyless cherry brown (what a snappy name :P )

Really like the keyboard a lot! I tested out all the switches at work (still have a few mechanical boards floating around) or in stores and found the brown to be most suited to me. Im 80% gaming, 20% typing I suspect.

My findings:
Black - too stiff
Red - too soft
Blue - too noisy
Brown - Just right for me

If you go on youtube, there's lots of good videos which give you an idea of sound, look out for the ones that compare 3 or 4 switch types.

I ruled out the Das as found quite a few anecdotal stories of people not being satisfied, whereas the more I read about Filco, the more positive stuff I find.

With regards to keycaps, I'd highly recomend getting a US layout if you want to customise, there's lots of options on the auction site for US (side printed keys, lazer etched keys, normal keys, all diff colouts) but virtually nothing for the UK layout. The PBT keycaps are nicest imo. I have purchased the red WASD keys for the Filco but really it's the red Esc key that makes it :)

To back up a couple of previous posters:

- The build quality is really outstanding
- Full choice of switches bar red (suggest KBC poker or Noppoo choc mini for that)
- Easily customised keys
- Can be supplied by UK company (better for warranty etc)
- It's Matte and not gloss (I spit on my old lycosa!!)
- If it doesnt work, you can always hit them with it

Happy shopping!

Seems I was misled, although looking at photos it only has the Windows key on the right, right? I always use the one on the left :/

Think I might take a punt on it though.

It's only on the right to prevent you from accidently hitting it when gaming.

Instead they have a function key where the left Windows key was.
