** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

The keys are more responsive, the slightest touch of a key, and it responds.

I use it for gaming, way better than my Saitek Eclipse 2.

Not sure I like the sound of that. Can see myself pressing keys by accident.

Still, I think it's one of those that you need to try before you buy...

I have a filco majestouch and it's amazing, would never go back to a normal keyboard now.

I have one as well, still adjusting to it but very happy with my purchase, got it from the same place as you but via another website. Only thing that annoys me at the moment is the brightness of the various lock lights, which appear to be lasers. I'll cover them with something to diffuse it at some point.

The first thing you need to decide when buying a mechanical keyboard is what kind of switches you want. I went for the Cherry MX Black (liner) which don't click, both the MX Blue and MX Red based models are available if you prefer them.

Each of the switch designs is desirable for specific objectives: With games, having a tactile bump is useless, so a smooth, linear switch is best, as found in the MX Blacks and Reds.

Having some major trouble finding somewhere that sells a Filco Majestouch-2 Tactile (Brown), UK layout, and not tenkeyless (still has numpad). Anyone own one of these tell me where you got it form? :)

I wasn't aware there was a Majestouch-2 from Filco, on first view it doesn't seem to have anything different from the normal Majestouch apart from it comes with red WASD keys?

Either way i have the regular old Majestouch (has numpad) with Brown switches, and i absolutely love the thing. Again as others have said it's one of those things you think you don't need, till you try it and don't want to go back :)

I actually couldn't find anything saying what the difference is, Filco don't even seem to have a website to show their products. I really hate it when companies make it hard for you to buy stuff from them :S.

The differences between the Majestouch 1 and 2 are minimal. 2 has a double sided PCB and the box+logo are a bit nicer. I've read conflicting reports on the LED brightness being tweaked.

The purple WASD and red ESC keys are optional extra's. If you want them then be sure to order a Filco key puller as well, shouldn't cost you more than £10 total which I though was pretty reasonable on a £100 keyboard.

The only company I know about are listed above. Excellent service after I had to RMA my first one after half the keys didn't work, was sorted the next day. I'm not sure if they are a competitor so avoiding mentioning them ;)

It might be useful to know:
Linear Action Keyboard - Cherry MX Black (gaming)
Tactile Action - Cherry MX Brown (middle ground)
Click Action - Cherry MX Red (noisy)

For anyone looking, I found a Majestouch-2 at the afformentioned retailer after emailing them. The product with code FKBN105M/UKB2 is a Majestouch-2 UK 105 key layout with brown switches, but there is an error in the description which says it is just a Majestouch.

The "click action" switches are blues mate, red's are linear like blacks but with a lighter spring. Blue's aren't great for (FPS) gaming as the reset point is above the actuation point meaning you have to release the key nearly the whole way up before you can press it down again which makes double tapping a bit more difficult. They are also use a pretty light spring which makes them good for RTS/rythem games and long typing sessions (if you can put up with the click ;)).

Blacks are seen as better for gaming as you can "ride" the activation point and keep the switch half depressed and just push it a little bit for double tapping. The springs are quite heavy though and can tire out your fingers after a long session.

Browns have a slight tactile bump on activation about half way down the keystroke and use the same light springs as the blues. I currently have a TKL Majestouch 2 with browns and use it for both gaming and typing without problems and it is seen as the middle ground between blacks and blues.

It comes down to personal preference which switch you get though, I have a friend that types all day long on blacks and comes home and games on a standard Logitech rubber dome...Try before you buy is the best bet (or buy 3 and send 2 back :P)

Oh, re the keycap puller, you can make a decent one out of 2 paper clips, no need to spend £10 on a branded one ;).

edit - That wiki probably explains it better then me.

When purchasing my Filco I couldn't decide which switch type to go for between black, brown and blue so I ordered all three on the agreement I could send back the two I didn't want.

Blue: Ordered out of curiosity really, I don't do a lot of typing but wanted to hear what the audible clicking was like. Wouldn't really recommend this one even for typists as the noise gets annoying.

Brown: From reading reviews before trying any keyboards, I initially assumed this would be the one to keep as it is supposed to be good for both typing and games. However, the resistance on the brown keys was just too light for games - even lighter than blue.
Great to type on but unless you're a very delicate touch in games, I wouldn't recommend it.

Black: Perfect for games, 'ok' for typing - nice bit of resistance to keypresses but not too much. For typing it won't be as good as blue or brown but it is no 'worse' than typing on a standard non-mechanical keyboard. So I kept this one in the end.
If you type *a lot* then probably look at brown instead.

Some good info here:

Sorry to hijack. Reading this thread, you guys have convinced me to go and buy a mechanical keyboard.

Anyone here own the SteelSeries 6GV2 keyboard? I noticed that Overclockers sell it, at a decent price :D

I've never used the macros on my G15. The only thing I will miss is the display. And I only ever display CoreTemp on that. Just wondering where I can go to test a mechanical keyboard, and see how they feel.

I actually like the blues for FPS gaming (most instances where I'll be double tapping are on mouse anyhow) I way prefer the tactile feel of the blues over membrane keyboards.
