** The Official OcUK Mechanical Keyboard Thread **

I actually like the blues for FPS gaming (most instances where I'll be double tapping are on mouse anyhow) I way prefer the tactile feel of the blues over membrane keyboards.

What keyboard do you have Rroff?

I am tempted by the SteelSeries G6V2 (with the blacks) or one with the browns.

I do a decent amount of typing sometimes, but I do game more than anything. I think if I got used to it, I would be ok with the blacks for gaming and typing.

I'm assuming the G6V2 that OcUK sell is a proper UK layout.

Just using a basic cherry keyboard, I do programming (so a lot of typing) as well as gaming so membranes are just nasty for my useage and red/blacks don't really work so well for my non-gaming purposes whereas the blues are nice IMO for prolonged typing.

Ah ok. Yeah, from what I've read, I am understanding the switches a lot more now!

Been wanting a new keyboard for a while, this G15 annoys me. I don't use most of it's features, and generally, it's a bit rubbish.

Wish I could test the keyboards somewhere, but I don't know where I could try.

I have used the macro keys on my G15 in perhaps once instance, ever. They will not be missed.

Only thing I will miss is media controls but hey, no big deal.

For anyone looking, I found a Majestouch-2 at the afformentioned retailer after emailing them. The product with code FKBN105M/UKB2 is a Majestouch-2 UK 105 key layout with brown switches, but there is an error in the description which says it is just a Majestouch.

Thanks for this post btw; I wouldn't have found this otherwise

As with all peripherals, it all depends on the game. Double tapping is the most problematic on blue switches, so for MMO's and RTS games, yes, the blues are not the best choice. But then for FPS games, the choice of switch is more user dependant. Most people read a certain guide which tells them which keyboard they should buy, but without actually using the keyboard. There is nothing wrong with any of the switches, while the blacks are a more gaming focused switch, it does present a different feel to to typing, which can be difficult for people who write on a lot of forums.

If you are going to buy a mech keyboard without trying any of them, think first about how much typing you do, then how much gaming, then what type of games you play.

I bought a Zowie Celeritas from OCUK a few months ago. MX brown switches. I got it after a lot of research - blacks being bad for typing, blues not great for gaming, browns being the perfect compromise.

I would actually say that the brown switch is not a best of both worlds switch, rather a huge compromise. It is nice to type on, but doesn't quite have the feel of a blue switch, they just don't offer enough of an improvement over a non mech keyboard to justify the cost. At the same time, it isn't a gaming switch, often being so light, you can make lots of mistakes while gaming, pushing the wrong key at the wrong time is made a lot harder by the black switch. Again, it does depend on the intensity of your gaming and how much you play, but when you are in a clutch situation, 3 on 1 with the bomb down, hitting G by mistake can be a nightmare.

I've never had this problem with my brown switches and I play a lot of games competitively at a decently high level.

Typing from my Majestouch 2 now :D

Was a bit concerned at first when I checked box out as it said US 104 ASCII layout on the side of the box but it IS a UK layout, phew! :P

Comes with a packaging plastic cover for the keys which I am definately going to keep to put on when not in use, no need to pay for something else when this will do the job just fine. Could even spray paint it if I felted it needed to look a little cooler :D

As for typing. OH MY GOD. Browns are SUBLIME. Perfect for me, absolutely amazing to type on. Going to take a little while coming from a G15 to get used to the dimensions and key layout but already my typing speed is not only faster but more accurate too.

£95 well worth it, going to need to do some gaming sessions and see what it is like there but seeing as it's that much better than my G15 in typing I have no doubts it will be perfect. The touch on browns is lovely and light but enough that you know you have pressed the key. Not to difficult to not bottom out the keys as long as you are not typing like a maniac :D

Got a Ficlo Majestouch 2 with the brown switches a couple of days ago and i love it so far, got a fair bit of weight to it and feels solid, great to type on, at least compared to my old keyboard anyway (Logitech illuminati). Also got the wrist wrest for it aswell.

IBM Model M. You can't get better built than them.

I've got a few in PS/2 form that came from the first IBM PS/2 equipped servers - still working perfectly.

Are mechanicals better for gaming than low profile keys? When I changed from a regular profile keyboard to the razer lycosa, it took a little while to adjust to the low profile keys, but I think it feels much better for WASD.

I personally am not a fan of low profile keys, only reason I use them is on a laptop because I have no choice. I find it way too easy to push the wrong keys.
