Does anyone know any more details about the "free" upgrade for those of us who bought a Mac in the last 30 days odd?

I've seen a few details about with some links to pages that are now down.. I'm hoping that it's a pretty quick process and I can register and get downloading later this evening!

Depends where you purchased. If your purchased online from Apple then it's instant. Probably only if you purchased from an authorised reseller such as PC World do they request the proof. Otherwise people would walk in check the Serial in "About This Mac" and request a free copy.
 
Yes do it first, because if you take out your current drive and try to do a fresh install on a new HD it will come up with an angry face blaring at you. (There is no built in system to sort a HD out at the front end of an OS install, you can reformat it once u got the OSX loader working)

Format it now, then do fresh install.
