I was extra careful when linking Dualsense controllers because I wasn’t sure ocuk stocked them or not. I think they stock Xbox controllers but no PlayStation. (I checked before linking)

I recently got the Pro and am glad to see something of backwards compatibility library but it's still pretty sparse. Do we know if Sony is adding to it like Nintendo does to the Switch online stuff or do we think this paltry library is it?

I'd have got a PS5 on day one had the BC gone beyond just PS4 stuff... PS3 streaming is not the ticket either, still hoping for local emulation.

Previous gen games get added every month to the Premium tier. They added 2 new games to the PS3 streaming catalogue last month, which they have not done in a long time. Resistance 1 & 2.

I think you can now clearly see the pattern I mentioned - heavy games that have to be upscaled from below 1080p will rarely give good results at this stage.

Low base res is just what PSSR struggles with (and so does DLSS still but it does a better job given its maturity) and it will get better at it but the reality is this is just paid betatesting of PS6 tech but Sony ingenously made people pay them, not the other way round.

When you think about it, they mostly showcased games that were bound to be better because they had already run exceptionally well on the base hardware and while I wish everything was as good as Stellar Blade, it just won't happen.

Games are getting more demanding so it'll be a mixed bag for the foreseeable future and it's no coincidence the worst offenders are upscaled from as low as 720p, like this one. SH2, Survivor, AW2, Avatar etc. have shown this as well and that's why devs are struggling.

Even in GT7 that's had a great patch, you'd only use PSSR if you want cockpit RT, otherwise the only thing you're getting is a fuzzier image.

And let's not forget PSSR takes resources to use as quite a chunk of the additional grunt has to be used to offset the lag introduced by the upscaler.

TL;DR: The tech will be fully leveraged by the PS6 as it will have matured by that time and the additional grunt will allow for higher base res -> cleaner upscalling -> more power left for improvements in other areas.

It is a poor show that you pay twice as much for the more powerful console and in some instances end up getting worse image quality.

Yeah the games where PSSR is enabled and can't be turned off are the worst, if they have a low internal resolution then end up looking worse than a base ps5. Sony promised superior image quality and high framerates for $800, but they haven't delivered on the image quality part so far

The 30th anniversary themes are awesome. Hope they’re permanent. I’ve gone with ps2. The little beeps and boops of the UI are so nostalgic.

Edit.

There are four themes to choose.

OG PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4. All with small theme changes and small UI sound changes.

also, the boot up has changed to the original PlayStation 1 boot theme.

Just switched them off myself.

The 30th Anniversary stuff is a nice touch, although as someone old enough to know the real anniversary is 29th September next year, which just goes to show how bad the release delays were back then. Shame they meant to be time-limited.

I will say this in connection to some of the PS5 Pro patches, so far for me the 'good' has outdone the 'bad', but that may be in-part that I'm not playing the games which have been adversely impacted by Pro patches. After selling all my Xbox stuff in the summer the PS5 has been rejuvenated somewhat becoming probably my most played platform so the fact I now have a quieter, smaller and slightly less ugly PS5 has been quite good. I think PSSR was necessary and I'd be stunned if it doesn't improve but obliviously is laying the groundwork for the next PlayStation.

Starting to thing about the Portal although I already have the Steamdeck & Switch so don't technically need it but sometimes it would be useful for certain games.

3rd December in Japan it was released.
Oh yes, remember coming close to getting one on import. Actually if I'm honest more so the Saturn because back no-one really knew just how lopsided the PSX-Saturn battle would become. And those early Japanese releases were more appealing.

But yea in PAL land you had to make do with reading EDGE for nine-months before you even got close to one (ignoring the fact Saturn did get a surprise early release that summer).
