Sony Corp. plans to produce far fewer units of its upcoming PlayStation 5 in its first year than it had for the previous-generation console’s launch, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Tokyo-based tech giant is limiting its initial production run in part because it expects the PS5’s ambitious specs to weigh on demand by leading to a high price at launch, the people said, asking not to be identified because the subject is private. The global Covid-19 pandemic has affected Sony’s promotional plans for the new device but not its production capacity, they added.

Whereas it should come as no surprise to anyone that initial sales of the next generation of consoles is likely to be lower than previous versions - basic uncertainty in the world and the capacity to build.
It should also be taken with a pinch of salt - this is Bloomberg and they have made some absolutely terrible posts over the last 6 months regarding both Sony and MS - they have printed stories based off of nobodies on Reddit, that kind of thing.
Would come as no surprise if this becomes first hand information from Sony, it's anything but official from these jokers.

I'll only buy it a year in anyway so no rush.

Want there to be actual new games that use all the new power and not just remasters from PS4 classics.

I've not bothered buying a PS4 yet and might just wait for this thing now...
I flogged mine kept it for the exclusives but last year only used it once to play death stranding so thought whats the point im hardly using it and might as well sell it now because when the PS5 comes out that many people will be trying to sell their PS4's won't hardly get owt for it.

So what do you guys think about the production cost increases?

Apparently Sony has had to jack up the retail price and now doesn't think it can match PS4 year one sales so they only producing half as many units in year 1

Bloomberg reckons the ps5 retail price is currently on track to launch at $550usd unless component prices drop significantly

The two components that are the culprits for this large price increases over previous estimates is the SSD and RAM - both have increased in price significantly since the start of corona virus

I guess we shall see, until I hear the price from Sony themselves I will take any report on price or availability with a pinch of salt.

Having said that I honestly think both consoles are going to shock some people with launch price, I've said it before that it wont have gone un noticed that people spend upto £1k on the latest smart phones every two years, a £500 price point might not scare either company.

Bloomberg reckons

Yeah, let's all get our gaming info from what Bloomberg reckons, eh ?

As ZG002 says above, until you hear something from Sony, every single thing you see online is hearsay, rumor, wishful thinking, lies, and guesses.

Also, here's a skit about Reckoning :D

I’m expecting between £599-£699.

Compared to a high end phone I think they propose good value. Especially if they have a 7-8 year odd life cycle.

I think I might hold out 2-3 years for the refresh version that ends up costing £300. Will take that long for some exclusives to build up. In the mean time either keep my PS4 Pro or sell that and just keep my Switch as my only console.

I’m still going with my original guess of £499 :) which I’m okay with.
This is where I'm at as well. Anything over £500 will put too many people off. We're all enthusiasts here so most won't care but we are the minority when the majority just want a FIFA/COD box. But hey, like everyone here, I'm just guessing.

We will see, I'd be happy at the price point but just don't know.

Everytime a gen launches people usually try to price up a comparable gaming pc and usually they are something like £200 more or so.

Things seem to have gone mad with pc tech over the course of this gen, a RTX 2070 alone will cost you the neck end of £500.

I'm expecting £599 for the PS5 and XSX, and £349 for the Series S.

Maybe £549 for the top spec consoles if they really try to compete on price.

I'm expecting £550/£600 which I'm fine with

Cripes. I think that makes my decision for me - buy PS5 and stick with my PC for the Xbox games. I might just get a dirt cheap Xbox One for those games that don't run properly on PC - Splinter Cell - or don't have PC versions - Red Dead Redemption.

Thats what ill be doing, unless XFX offers something special no need for it when I have my PC, however ive enjoyed most of Sony exclusives so a PS5 is a must. The launch games will decide if i buy it day one or not mind

I don't have a PC and XBOX has been a disappointment to me this gen apart from gamepass. I will be going for the PS5 and the Switch for Nintendo exclusives and portability.

If MS can give me compelling exclusives then I won't rule them out.
