If you are not aware already you might want to sign up to PlayStation Plus Extra and get access to a catalogue of games some of which are the best the console offers.

Yep, signed up and already downloading a ton of games!

I feel a 2/3TB drive is going to be needed soon.

Glad I picked one up before the price increase. Crazy strategy by Sony, though with demand still high for the PS5, I doubt it'll impact sales that much if at all.

What the nothing burger of a lawsuit?
It's more lawsuits than their competitors have on the issue, but I was referring more to the general sentiment. The games are not cheap on Sony's store, although the recent subscription options have improved things.

They are plenty cheap if you have the patience to wait for a sale. Digital games however way you slice it unless they dirt cheap are a ripoff as you own nothing.

Not totally true though is it as you are buying entertainment just like any other digital format. Regarding value most of what I buy on the store is less than £20 because as you say I am happy to wait.

The £30 is a strange thing to do but it certainly won’t stop people buying a PS5 if they want one.

Why not absorb the cost though? Hardware might have to be sold at at a loss but they can make it back from the ridiculous prices on the digital store and PS+ subscriptions.

It's already sold at a loss, and this price increase could already represent them absorbing some of the increased costs they're facing.

The FT has quite a good article on it from a less gamer-orientated perspective:

Price increases are happening all over the place, blaming greed alone is being awfully naive especially in the market of luxury electronics. Life is about to get very expensive so if a £30 price increase has suddenly put a PS5 out of reach for some people, perhaps that's a blessing in disguise.

It will be nearly 2 years since the console has been released, most people outside the USA cant normally. Its crazy, yet comes an price increase on top some retairs already jacking up the price above RRP since release.
Yep, I have been planning to ditch my series S when my gamepass runs out and try PS5. It's been my plan for the last few months but as yet I don't see a simple quick way to buy one so I'll keep waiting.

I had thought soon we would see or have talk of a "slim" model but they need to sort out enough "phat" models before that!

I don't want it badly enough to pay inflated prices, I know I can do that anytime. Just want it from the high street, Sony or Amazon for simplicity in case of any issues/warranty etc.

The government needs to curb inflation by reducing the amount people spend. Nice to see all companies doing their part!

Same again, why are they always favoured. So these global costs magically are not global over America?

Looking at above replies looks like they getting favoured stock allocation as well, wow.
North America is the main competitive market for a lot of companies. They overcharge and rip off Europe&Asia to offset the losses from staying competitive in North America.

Perfect example of this is EVGA.

Pretty sure it was profitable from August last year or disc model anyway. This is just greed nothing more.
Operative word "last year" a war has started since and the USD has gained greatly in strength...

Nintendo has already put their price up but were smarter in doing it, charge £50 more for the OLED Switch at the cost of £25 in components.

The strength of the USD compared to other currencies was the most probable reason they avoided a increase this time. The U.S is by far PlayStations biggest single market why would they not give it priority? Anecdotally i would say the U.S and U.K at least have been treated more or less the same as it's not like you can walk into a retail shop in the U.S and get one.

Been away at work so couldn't read everything. This I am quite sure is spot on for why they're not affected.

So the increase is equal to the shift in exchange rate right? Will it go back down when it corrects itself later?

Looking into it a bit more it looks like they have based it on the threat of the competition, the USA seems to be their weakest market so they need to keep it priced more aggressively, whilst Japan their strongest has a huge cost increase. Just looks like modern economics, if in strong position push the profits harder. Some articles have suggested they selling at a loss in america due to the strength of the xbox.

The strength of the USD is probably why they increased the price (and of course cost increases from tsmc on silicon).

A lot of multinational corporations funnel cash to the parent and if the one they are funneling to is in the US then they can be facing lower margins on exchange rate risk. The Yen has also been weakening so that if they are funneling into Japan then that could be why however then they should have increased the US price too unless they are **** scared of US consumers.

But either way, there is a lot of fluctuations happening in exchange rates globally due to banks raising interest rates and some raising more aggressive than others so all multi national corporations will be getting hit

Following that rule then they should have been cheaper at launch.

Sony are happy to throw money at Devs to keep games off of gamepass. I guess they have to fund that somehow. On the flip slip I suppose my PS5 is slightly more valuable.

From the article I linked to in the same post:

In June, long-term Sony analyst Pelham Smithers calculated that rising material costs, high energy prices and the yen’s descent to a 20-year low could have meant that Sony was losing as much as ¥15,000 on each PS5 unit it sold in Japan. Globally, the average loss per machine was likely to be about $50, Smithers said at the time.

Price rises for territories that haven't already have one will probably come in time, it's not like it's uncommon for companies to do them at different stages.
