*** The Official Prototype Thread ***

Apparently there is an embargo on reviews until thursday, I guess if you give it a good review they let them be published though as a couple have gone up, never a good sign.

Anyone got this yet? I've just been into town and there's copies of it everywhere for sale.

Was going to pick it up, but had specifically gone in to get 2 other games, so left it for the while.

Prototype is a game with many cool features. However, it lacks many of the finishing touches that make for a great and memorable game. To say the graphics and game engine need work is a massive understatement and many of the missions are cookie cutter in design without any real focus or attention to detail. Thankfully, Alex Mercer's absorbing and shape shifting powers manage to overcome many of the shortcomings of Prototype. Though the missions themselves aren't anything special, the vast array of powers provides their own variety and flair.

6.5 Presentation
Very hit or miss. Some cutscenes are a confused joke, others are well-produced. The story isn't your standard fare, but that doesn't mean it is outstanding.
5.5 Graphics
If it weren't for some nice animations, this game wouldn't have anything going for it visually.
7.5 Sound
There's nothing exceptional going on here, but the sounds and music do their job. The voice acting is decent.
8.0 Gameplay
Toying around with the powers, consuming and crushing everything in your path, and generally playing with the world is fun. The mission design could be better and things do tend to get too chaotic.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
You can do just about everything in well under 20 hours. I didn’t find myself compelled to play for a second time at all.

Good OVERALL

Very lucky to have yours turn up so early! Mine wont be delivered until either Thursday or Friday at the very latest, on the PC version though so I can have the best graphics and play with all the bells and whistles on. With my new machine (new toy) I prefer the PC version as opposed to the Xbox 360 version.

The place I bought it from is very good for deliveries!

Girlfriend bought LBP on 22nd December and they managed to get it to me before Christmas...

Not sure I can be bothered with this at release after inFamous also...

There are 250 orbs scattered throughout Manhattan for you to collect. Unfortunately, you oftentimes can't see them until you are literally on top of them. The game engine fails to draw them at any meaningful distance. You can be across a street and not know that you're within 20 yards of one of these orbs. Without any other ways to find them -- there are no maps or sound indicators -- tracking down all of the orbs is less fun than it is chore.

Would likely drive me insane. Think I'll wait till its cheap and there's an accurate map for those orbs.

Think willbe picking this up when it's cheap too. Just not sounding like it's worth full price - thankfully I will likely be having fun with Red Faction for some time :)

ps3 review got an 8.5 on ign, weird.

For those of you wondering how different Sucker Punch’s Infamous is from Prototype, the answer is ‘very’. While both occupy the same genre space, hitting stores with a super-powered protagonist imbued with freewheeling movement across an open-world pocked with missions and sub-missions, and gameplay that rewards exploration (both have the equivalent of Crackdown’s agility orbs to find) but is very much combat-centric, Infamous is more elegant and refined in design, with more of a focus on ranged combat, while Prototype is – truth be told - more frenetic and fun. Prototype is more of a spectacle and puts more power and choice in the hands of the player. It can feel messier in design as a result, with something of a kitchen sink approach, but gliding about the city at speed, slicing and dicing enemies in the midst of massive firefights, having greater choice in upgrading your character, and generally giving you more variety in gameplay, are all big pluses. Well worth checking out.

8.0 Presentation
So many options in so many areas. Pity there’s no restart mission option on the pause menu.
8.5 Graphics
Decent art design throughout but the standout is definitely the memory flashbacks.
8.5 Sound
A rousing score paired with decent voice acting.
8.5 Gameplay
Controls can be unwieldy, but once you have them down, both movement and combat are a blast.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
It’s not all that long, but there are heaps of side missions, orbs to find and upgrades to purchase.

I reserved this game to come either tomorrow or friday, and I am also tempted to go out and buy Imfamous as well, as I just love games where you go and kill loads of enemies :D
