The official Ps3 thread

looks like my PS3 is getting shipped out today, its currently being packed O.o

There's a thread about this on another forum. I've not read it since the first few posts, but they got emails saying it was dispatched on Friday. Apparently there was either a mistake with the emails or they're getting shipped out but held up at the couriers till Friday. I can't see anyone risking the wrath of Sony by letting people have machines early.

thanks just that i saw somewhere (cant remember ) that they were gradually going to put things on the PS uk/euro? store so not to overload the servers at first. Maybe something to do with making sure the update isnt to slow as there could up to 1 mil downloading at about the same time.

Some confirmed info on firmware 1.6

US, March 19, 2007 - Sony has at last provided details on version 1.6 of the PS3's system software. This is the highly anticipated update whose release was being timed for the 3/23 launch of the European/PAL PS3. The update will actually arrive just before that, on 3/22.

The biggest new feature for the update is something that was previously confirmed by company executives: background downloading. With Version 1.6 installed, you'll be able to use the PS3 for other things while downloading large or multiple files. Sony states that there are some limitations to this feature, but these won't be announced until the day of the update's availability.

Those who use their PSP as a remote media viewer for the PS3 have something to look forward with version 1.6. Previously, the PSP had to connect directly to the PS3 in order to access media, meaning you had to be in the same area as the PS3, and only owners of the 60 Gig model could take advantage of the feature. Version 1.6 adds the ability to access the PS3 from a wireless point in your home, bringing 20 Gig users in on the action, and presumably allowing additional freedom of movement. Not quite the worldwide access we were hoping for, but this is at least a step in the right direction.

Sony is adding a bonus for those who make use of the system's software keyboard during text entry. Version 1.6 adds the option for a full-size keyboard, for those who aren't satisfied with the current cell phone-style entry system.

Other new features affect the system's web browser. The browser will now detect your video-out settings and set the standard font size accordingly, and even deal with nasty interlacing artifacts. You'll also be able to make use of a new "pin-point zoom" feature to zoom in on pages.

All that, along with the previously announced Folding@Home support should make for one hell of an update. There could be even more to the update than Sony has announced here, so be sure and power up your PS3 on the 22nd to experience version 1.6 first hand.

Interested to know what the 'limitations' are on the bg downloading. If it just means you can't do it whilst in game or something.

Yes, I think Phil Harrison said in an interview that the background downloading will only work whilst you are in the XMB. So if you play a game, it will stop. Don't know if it will stop if you watch a Blu-ray disc, though.

I pro-ordered a PS3 together with a 40W2000 and I just found out they will only deliver the PS3 if they have a 40W2000 in stock :(

Limited bg downloading isn't really a big deal for me, if you can't play a game or watch a Blu Ray I just set it to download just before dinner.

@the people that already own a 60gb version, is it possible to give the PS3 a static IP so I can put the PS3 in a Demilitarized zone of the router?

Yeah i think it is pretty much a straight port and will run in 1080p

Tekken 5 cost 20 bucks, don't think i am sure i hear it was £12.99 over here, but i coulda been imagining that.

MK2 with online is coming at the end of the month too, dunno if it will be out for the EU launch or if they will wait a week.

I sense a joystick purchase on the cards (Even though I promised myself not to spend a lot on the PS3!!)

In my PS1 and PS2 days I had (sold it now):
namco-stick.jpg

Hammered every single SF2 game and Tekkens, up to 4.

With the 360 I have :

Unfortunatley DOA4 is crap. Only other beat'em ups on 360 in 18 months has been SFII Hyperfighting and MK3 (mk3 doesnt support reconfiguring keys so you cant use the stick).

I guess my only choice for PS3 would have to be the Hori Arcade stick, but apparently it doesn't work with old PS2 games.

Part of my reason to go back to PS3 is that no good beat em ups have come to 360, now I can't find a good arcade stick!!!

Guys, I dunno if you've heard but some of the games aren't going to make Friday apparently.

http://www.videogame-news.com/2007/03/19/five-ps3-games-miss-launch-day-in-europe/

F.E.A.R., Splinter Cell Double Agent, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, NBA 2K7 and Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom will miss the big day along with a few of the Network titles.

If you have pre-ordered the above you might want to consider changing them to something else.
