****The Official Samsung Galaxy S II Thread***

buymobiles.co.uk have new stock in and I have had confirmation that it is been delivered tomorrow. On T mobile if anyone wants to know. Only been waiting 2 weeks. :)

Quick question (I am sure the answers are in this thread but there are too many posts to look through!).

If someone buys the phone on T-mob/O2/Vodafone (the 3 networks who offer this phone direct), The phone will have some sort of branding (be that boot screens, apps) and potential Sim locking.

If someone buys it offline (circa £450) or through a 3rd party company, they will get a "retail" phone, unlocked to any compatible GSM SIMS from any UK network.

The only difference between the 2 is software. I guess people in the 1st group have to wait for phone updates (fixes/patches/OS updates) when their provider tests and then releases them. People in the second group get these as soon as Samsung release them.

How does someone in the first group get the same software as the second group? i.e retail version of software and unlocked. Is there like a "vanilla" ROM that can be flashed over any network locked/branded handset. Also once you do this (assuming you don't want to faff around with other stuff) would you just get all updates at the same time as a retail boxed version?

btw, for anyone waiting from Orange (online/direct etc) I spoke to them today and they still say Early June for release (always the last!!), no idea who reliable this is, just going on what someone in the retentions department told me.

With no applications running at all, and having hit 'clear memory' in task manager, I'm at 309/833MB of RAM being used. What are you guys getting?

Also, clearing memory closed 13 applications, even though none were running in active. How can you see what non-active applications are still running?

Non active apps are not running but in a sleep state. Android does not need to have apps closed via any task manager, just leave them be else you end up closing apps that push through notifications and other stuff.

RAM should be utilised anyway especially when it's available in abundance.

For comparison I have 422MB being used and I never close apps using task managers. I have over 100 apps installed.

I get 361MB and closing 20 applications but I been tinkering and have had the phone on for days and loadsa apps. On a reboot it's about 220MB. Clearing memory stops the clock on Beautiful Widget updating so I don't do it anyway. Never had to do it tbh and like Khaan! says, you shouldn't do it. Gonna reboot.

OK thanks. I know that RAM is supposed to be used, I was just wondering if my usage was inline with other people's.

Imagine it's Windows 7 and forget about concerning yourself with RAM usage as it's never a problem as it's handled perfectly fine.

Job done!

You'll know when something is wrong or an app has a memory leak, stuff will slow down, just like on Windows. You can then long press HOME to use task manager to find the offending app and kill it in that moment.
